backgrounds

I am currently using a former fish tank as a reptile tank. I did put a background on mine and my snake has seemed more outgoing since I did (or just maybe more comfortable in his home?). I've added a rock and some fake plants too. I often find him against that side of the tank peering into the background, as if trying to find a way "in".

I have a background on the back and one side of my viv, and it looks very nice. I, too, have noticed my girl looking at it and moving around it with interest. She often hides in that corner of the viv, under some silk leaves. I guess she likes it, and I'm certain it's got to feel more secure than having 4 open sides of clear glass. Even brown paper would do the trick.

I just put a black plastic trash bag in the back so that her hider log would seem more closed in for her. The other viv is in a shelf as you can see, so it is already closed in for her.

Is that cloth?

I noticed on some viv's I see pieces of fabric in there.. is that an article of clothing that you put in the tank ?

Actually, that's a piece of paper towel in there. Around the time she's getting ready to shed, I wet it down and she likes to hang out under it. I've found that dry, it makes a really good hide. Talk about cheap!

Thats a good Idea

I will have to give that try :)

Now do some people put something of theirs to get the snake used to their smell? I have seen a post on this forum about someone suggesting that and does it work?

I've been considering a bacground for my viv because I think Zafel gets freaked out by his reflection in the glass.

back ground

I have found that if you use fake plants and hang them along the back of an aquarium to make them simulate vins or branches. My corns seem to climb them, they seem very comfortable. For the ground cover I use grounded coconut shell, grounded so fine all u have to do is add water then ring it out, I also have real rock in the tank, real drift wood and a large water bowl, the bowl looks like a pond. Corns like to burrow, so with the ground cover they are able to burrow very efficantly.

When I got my female corn she like to burrow all the time, I feed her one day and she only had her head out of the dirt, when the mouse came by she grabbed it and took it under the ground, killed the mouse and eat it under ground. Very cool.

She only did it once but I will remember it for ever.

You're going to end up with a snake that ingests substrate and dies of impaction feeding like that. Be careful feeding on substrate!

Re: backgrounds

Here is a pic of my snake trying to figure out a way into the background on his new viv. The photo is a bit grainy cuz I had to lighten it a bit since I was catching him offguard in the dark.:)

Nice background babbaloo! Is that a picture or is it a textured 3D background? I have been trying to find something that looks natural and that my snakes can climb on. I've seen some for fishtanks that might work but I can't figure out how to get them. In any case it looks good. I've also noticed that my snakes come out to explore more if their vivs are covered on three sides and so far I've just been draping sheets partway over them. They seem to feel more secure. I've also got some plastic plants and vines weaving all over the back walls of their tanks. They seem to like climbing up in them.
Hey, has anyone made their own 3D backgrounds?

Actually, it is a regular flat background I purchased at LLLReptile in San Diego. It does look a little 3-D. It has an aquarium print on the reverse side. That is a good idea to add some to the sides of the tank as well.

I haven't seen any textured prints, but I did see in another post by someone (I believe it was Bonzor) some fake rock pieces (plastic) that you can stick to the sides of the tanks. His were inside his beardie set up. I thought about adding a couple of those for some textures too!

Also, I have seen some reptile supply stores online sell kits to create your own textured shelves and stuff but I can't remember where! I've even thought about the stuff they sell at train hobby stores for creating landscapes and tunnels, but I am just not sure about what chemicals would be safe even after they dry.
