Basic Upgrading Terrarium/Selling Corn Question

Seaweed

Isaac
Hey everyone, I'm returning to CornSnakes.com after about a year-long hiatus since some question I need answered have arose. First of all, my 3ft. Bloodred corn has taken to stretching himself out to press his head against the top of his cage all night long, and as a result of being in such a precarious position, he usually ends up falling back to the bottom of the tank with a thud; but he just keeps doing it day after day. I am worried that he might injure himself one of these times by landing on something weird: I have also read that when snakes rub their noses on the top of their cages it's a sign that it's time to get a larger terrarium & I was wondering if this was true.
I was also wondering what my options are and where I can get started if I am looking to sell my snake. Or if it is even practical or common to sell an adult snake that wasn't bred or originally intented to be for sale. Or if it even makes a difference. See, I am a total newbie when it comes to selling snakes so any info on this topic would be much appreciated. Thanks

It's spring, and breeding time. My Liam was doing this for a quite a while and has since calmed down. And he is currently in a 55 gallon tank I got for $75 off of craigslist. Best place to find caging for little cash.

Corns are the most common pet snake in the world and it's absolutely normal for adults to be bought and sold. Unlike dogs and cats, Corns don't become dependent on particular people or families, so rehoming them is much les traumatic for them. Selling on a healthy adult Corn isn't frowned upon.

Assuming you're in the US, Shiari's suggestion of Craiglist is great. It's common to see Corns advertised there. You can search for Corn adverts to see what sort of prices they go for, and also what sort of wording to use in your advert.

Remember that your main concern should always be for the welfare of the snake. Check out any buyer as far as you can - make sure they either have good experience of Corns or that they're a well-informed beginner.

I would not recommend using CL to sell your snake. If in the US try the ebay classifieds. If you put in kijiji.com you will get there. CL in my experience tends to be a place of people who want animals for nothing so they can sell them elsewhere (exception made on those here who use it I am sure). I also find that reptile ads get flagged off ALOT. I have also gotten really awful emails about how reptile lovers should be shot along with their animals. Really crazy stuff. Just be really careful and if you do sell your snake I would not do it in my own home. We have had several break in attempts since we sold some ferret supplies from my ferret who passed last year.

What size of tank do you currently have your snake in?
The general rule is that the width and length added together should be equal to or longer than your snake (so a tank 2 feet long and 1 foot deep would be just big enough).
If you are looking for a cheap way to get a bigger tank, go buy a plastic bin at Walmart. I just bought some pretty big bins for my young corns for about $5 each. (Make sure you drill some air holes, of course).

If you want to sell your corn, try a local classifieds section. Here, we have a TV station that has classified ads online which is where I bought all my snakes and also where I found snake food!

Adult corn snakes are in demand. I am buying an adult bloodred this week, actually. I've seen adults for sell in the $40-150 range for common morphs.
Too bad you don't live closer... I love bloodreds.

Your snake probably is just feeling the springtime mating call, however... it is the season. He should calm down in a few months. As long as your tank is big enough for a 3 footer, he is fine.

Hope this helps :)
