Bearded Dragons

Butters

Yep dats a Pug
Hey!!! well I was doing some research and I think I might buy a Bearded Dragon... Could people tell me the pros and cons of them, how much they will cost (cage and all) And if you want, post pics of your Bearded Dragons.

:D Thanks

Ohmigod, if you get a hatchling: it will be a poop machine! Hatchlings are just like human babies in that way -- except, ok -- they only poop once a day, generally, but wow...it will seem non-stop! Also, until the dragon is a year old, it will need a lot of insects -- mostly being crickets which should measure no larger than the space between the beardie's eyes. So, you get a tiny dragon, you need tiny crickets...! Jolie would eat at least 1000 crickets every 2 weeks -- if not faster than that, until she was about 6 mos old. Then she started to slow down, mostly out of boredom, I think...that, and her butt was beginning to get lazy. :)

So, I switched her to superworms -- nasty creepy things. But, that's not necessarily a good choice as supers may be meatier than mealworms, but they still have chitin in their "shells" which beardies have a difficult time digesting. Case in point: Jolie had a build-up of chitin in her belly (only detectable by an $80 x-ray, which was very cool to see!), and after $280 worth of treatment & meds, she was all better again. :) I'm now raising dubia cockroaches, which my vet's tech refers to as "the complete meal!"...they're super-easy to raise, and now I just gotta get Jolie eating them in spite of her "seasonal/hormonal anorexia," which all reptiles seem to go through during the cooler months. And, you don't have to brumate beardies, though some will do it on their own voluntarily.

They're fun to have -- I've loved having Jolie for the past year & some...my 2nd graders have loved meeting her, too. :) They're characters, all right; check out videos on beardies on YouTube...there are some great ones!

Taking care of Jolie has not been tough & I *will* admit: I did zip zero zilch research before getting her, and though I read a ton afterward & got myself on the forum at reptilerooms.com, Jolie's vet & his techs "ooh"ed & "aah"ed over her, even when she was feeling sickly. So, I must've done something right!

Here's the girl when I first got her, the day after my 30th bday last year:

This is one of my favorite pictures of her, when they first start to really fill out, all pudge-butt-like...:) About 3 mos old...

Another cute one of the girl, at 2 or 3 mos old:

And, just recently, at the beginning of Oct...now, a year & 2 mos old, watching plane fly overhead as they descend into Midway:

A beardie is fun to have...I'd love to get another, when I have more space. :)

Thanks!

Thanks you so much for the info. Is there a good website that you know of that I can visit to learn as much as I can about them??? Or a website w/ videos... :D

I have to much time on my hands, so I need to have something to learn about... :shrugs::shrugs:My mom says I scare her sometimes... :D

I don't know why Jolie is so yellow; that's just part of her breeding, I guess. I know very little about the bearded dragon morphs -- and they're just as expansive as the corn snake morphs. Jolie has what would be called "Sandfire" coloring, though I wouldn't say that she's of the Sandfire morph because I don't know of her lineage -- and let me tell you: beardie breeders seem to be a lot more anal than corn snake breeders when it comes to being specific as far as morph-labeling! I got snapped at quickly when I made the mistake of using the word "morph" instead of "coloring" when describing her as looking like a Sandfire...!

She is a pretty girl, thus the name, which I gave her on the way home when I got her: "jolie" is the French adjective for "pretty." :)

Oooh, I learned a lot from reading the stickied posts at reptilerooms.com, under the bearded dragon forum, and the forum beardeddragon.org is also recommended. I also bought the book Bearded Dragons in Captivity when I bought Jolie, and it has great, explicit information...however, I learned to take that kind of info with a grain of salt and I also read around, compared notes, and figured out what worked best for Jolie. :) I now keep the book in my classroom's classroom library, and my 2nd graders borrow it for at-home reading...:)

I hear ya on wanting to learn: me, too -- same boat. And I'm 31 years old and I teach 2nd grade: it's fantastic. :) (To be honest, your mom shouldn't complain...it's better than the alternative of being out in the streets with gangs or whatever!) :)

I do know, though, that my set-up for Jolie was probably more expensive than for any of my snakes: beardies need at least a 40-gallon breeder tank when they reach -- at the latest -- 6 mos old. Then there's buying the insects & she'll need an overhead light plus an additional tube light for UVB rays (although, 15 mins in the sun is equal to 12 hours under the UVB bulb!...and a new one at least every 6 mos...) so that she can metabolize her calcium -- along with buying Calcium with D3 and Herptivite vitamin supplements...and what else? Vegetables & fruits -- because they are omnivores...and the veggies are from where they get their "water"...Jolie doesn't have a water dish, but she does take 1-2x weekly baths to stay hydrated & she gets her greens (turnip greens, dandelion greens, collard greens, mustard greens...all high in calcium...). Her tank's substrate are ceramic tiles -- much easier to clean up! I've read about people being able to "potty train" their beardies, but I doubt Jolie would ever have it...:p Along with a basking branch, a warm hiding log & a cooler hiding spot...along with a thermometer with probe for temp reading. Oh, and a timer-power strip for her lights so they come on around 5:30 am and snap off automatically at 5:30ish pm. I do have a heat lamp for her now, during the cooler temps, to help her at night now so that she digests & keeps pooping, so that I don't have the problem again that I just got her through...:p Anything else? Nope, can't think of anything...oh, and Jolie was $40 at a local animal show/expo from a local breeder, as a 4-week old hatchling. :)

I hope that that rambling helped! (I'm so in denial of working on my report cards!!!)
