Becoming FedEx Certified?

wildlifephotographer

Corn snakes rule!
Okay, so I sent out my test package today to start the process of becoming FedEx certified to ship reptiles. Oh, it was a headache from the get go. But I finally sent the test package off today 10-31-2011 and hope to hear from them in about a week or less.

My question is that I didn't include a business name on the Test package application form and was wondering if that is a for sure test failure outcome since I did not put anything down for that? Since I do not run a business and from what I understand they do not include home businesses as a business I just left it blank. I am hoping that will not determine weather or not the package will pass or not? Everything else from my understanding today went as it should. I'm just worried about that small detail.

Any suggestions on what I might put on it , next time if this one does come back with failed results?

Thanks,

Anjeanette Porter

I think you should be fine. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. I was blessed, mine went through smoothly.

You are not able to ship reptiles with out being certified unless you go through a 3rd party company. To become certified we have to prove that we can properly package a reptile for the safety of the reptile and people handling. What it means for you is generally lower shipping fees if you purchase from someone who is certified.

I sure hope it goes good for me. I'm so excited about getting certified because I am planning on doing major breeding next spring! I have two incubators now, One that can probably hold a large clutch of eggs/two small clutches and another that can probably hold a good sized clutch of eggs. I have three females old enough and big enough to breed and both males are good to go as well. Thought about brumating this winter but decided against it since I do not have another room to put them in. They will have to stay in my bedroom, where its warmer.

Have you set up your FedEx account yet? Don't you need a business name for that? And since you're going to breed snakes, don't you want to be listed as a registered breeder with American Cornsnake Registry? You can have a business name before you actually _start_ the business!

I don't know how difficult or how much it would take to get registered with the American Corn Snake Registry but I have been interested in finding out how to do it and how much it would cost for all my snakes to be registered most importantly my adults. I'm getting a paycheck although a really small one this month so I don't know what I will be able to spend on getting them registered. I do have a FedEx account number already. Don't think you have to have a business to have one. I will try not to have to have one that is a business registered with anyone because I do not believe and do not think that I will be making that much of a profit that I would have to give the Fed gov or state gov any of the little bit of money that I will probably make. I mean I'll probably spend more money taking care of them, incubating, feeding and housing them then I will when I am selling/shipping them off to new loving homes. So if I can get away from having to do that I will.

If you make at minimum $500, you have to report it to taxes. I did learn that much from college. :D

To register as a breeder with ACR there is no cost, you just fill out a web form. To register your snakes, the cheapest thing is to pay for a $60 annual unlimited membership which runs Jan 1st to December 31st, so at this point you may as well wait till January, join, register all your snakes, and then you can pre-register the clutches once you know how many eggs there are, then registering the babies is simple because the parents are already registered and each egg has a clutch ID.

Did you ever find out and/or contact your "account representative". I only ask out of curiosity because I was never able to get the FedEx customer service people to put me in contact with my supposed "account representative". In fact, I still have no clue who my account rep is, but whatever, I got through everything without that info.

Doesn't the live waiver stipulate that the shipment has to be from business to business? That's why I put my fictitious business name (hobby business name) under the business name when I registered with FedEx.

Okay, thanks Nancy for the information on the ACR registering as well as for the snakes. I will be doing that here in Jan then or as soon as possible.

Zoologygirl- no I have not been assigned a representative up to this point so I have no idea who it might be. But I've done basically everything with very little help from FedEx. So I just hope that this test package that I sent off yesterday will pass and that I will go through the rest without any hassle.

I never found out who mine representative was either. I am starting to think that it might be the way to do it.

Well, haven't heard anything back yet. I know it's only been a day or so but I'm anxious. I not very patient with things sometimes so I know it's going to take or see to take forever to get this process finished.

It took about a week for me to get my results (this included shipping time) then another week to get the form from legal.

I got my test package results back today! And it passed inspection!Yepeeeeeeeeeeeee! I am so happy. It was really neat how they did the results and stuff too. They even included pictures of my test package. So now, I have to wait for the sales rep to give me a call which hopefully will be tomorrow sometime.

YAY!!! Congrats. It was really cool to look at the pictures of the test package. I put a plastic lizard in my deli cup so it was cute the see little blue go on his journey.
