Bedding Alternative?

Patients took over asylum
After cleaning out my guinea pig cage the other night, I've discovered that I'm officially allergic to the aspen bedding. It was bad enough that my nose is completely clogged, as are my ears. I've gotten a headache and my throat ended up closing. I guess it's basically a given that I have to either get rid of the snakes or figure out an alternative. My rodents can be on fleece but what about the snakes?

I don't want to do paper towels because it just hasn't worked for me in the past with the adult snakes. Of course, all the wood bedding are now on my no-no list. I'm not looking for Carefresh because it's too expensive for the amount I need. Also, for some reason it molds in the Black Rat's cage. I still haven't figured that one out.

Do you think a fleece pad and fleece strips would work?

I don't see why not. It might be more work for you to clean but it is worth it if you don't have to get rid of your snakes.

How about shredding your own newspaper?

You could also try bark chips, which I've never found that dusty. I think they may be more of a UK thing though.

I use Carefresh, and my two babies seem to like it just fine. A few people have said it smells a little strange, but I don't notice it at all. Also, another forum member wrote the company a while back to see if they could use it for their snakes, and they got a free package. Just something to think about!

I forget what it's called, but I know SnakeBytesTV is doing some contest regarding a new kind of bedding. Kritter Krumbles maybe?

I would worry about using the fleece pad. When I got my first corn snake I used old bathroom towels to keep him on and cleaned them any time he pooped. However, he started to have weird scale issues (like little flakes) and I asked the breeder about it and he said towels can harbor bacteria, even if cleaned. You'd probably have to toss the fleece out after each use.

Have you tried this stuff? It's eco pet bedding, just crinkled strips of paper.

Or this, it's recycled paper.

SO I take it your snake is a climber and not a digger? Does it get nose rub burn when it tries? I have a friend who used the carpet and the snake constantly rubbed its nose to try and dig in.

need i go on?

I did shredded paper for a long time and still had a molding problem with the black rat. Maybe his poo is toxic because I would check every day and would usually find fuzzy poo. I guess I just kept missing a pile as he poos under the bedding instead of on top of it. I know the other snakes do decently on paper, but this silly black rat. I guess I'll have to get different types and try. I've considered Sani-Chips as well
