Bedding options?

Since I've had my snake i've been using pine shavings as her bedding. She doesn't seem to mind and she loves burrowing through it. I was just wondering what else I could use besides sand because I know sand will dry her out. Could I still with the shavings or should I try something else? She's just an orange amelanistic. Any help appreciated =)

You'll want to ditch the pine. Do a search on pine and you'll see it can be harmful to reptiles. Never use Cedar.

Aspen is good. You can also use newspaper or paper towel.

Me too...Aspen is sweet.
Looks nice...clumps well when soiled.
No odor.

Nothing a vacuum can't fix when changing tanks.

I get my aspen shavings in BIG bags from the local feed store. But you can get smaller bags in the pet section of Wal Mart.

what about a particular brand. I have seen threads where some brands were described as being filled with dust.
PS.
thanks kathy loved youre book

Thanks.

Yes, I have seen differnces in brands, including different shapes and sizes of the shreds. Some keepers will prefer one over another, and some brands hold their shape better when babies are tunneling through it. But I haven't seen any really terrible brands. Just try a smaller bag and see if you like it - not a big investment, lol! If it is too dusty (and you only have a medium sized or smaller bag), just dump it into a bucket or clean garbage can that has grating (maybe make it out of hardware cloth on a frame) on the bottom. As you use it, some of the dust will tend to sift down to the bottom, although it won't completely solve the problem. The wider the container and the shallower the aspen pile, the better it will sift itself out.

I use Kaytee brand aspen in a big bag I get at my local pet store (sorry, I won't shop at Wal Mart). It's pretty dust free. I tried the carefresh stuff for a while and hated it. I've also used coconut husk and repti-bark as well as some sort of tiny critter bedding and I've gone back to aspen.

I order mine online, and it's a no-brand asphen and cheap. Being from the UK it works out cheaper if i buy it in bulk as my local shops (3 in total) don't sell it. It work out at roughly converted to $45 for 100 litres.

I pick mine up at the local herp show in a huge bag for I think 20 bucks the last go round. Brand name is Teklad. And when I say huge I mean the bag is like 3 1/2 feet high, 2 feet wide and 16 inches deep. Lots and lots of aspen.

I'd check for a feed store around. $20 bucks seems a bit much. I'm getting the same size you described at the local feed store for $11.

I agree...someone is buying at the feed store and reselling at the local show.
$20 is definitely high...I paid under $14 for about the same size bag at a PET store. LASTS a LONG TIME. That stuff really expands.
You would be surprised how much use you will get out of a little bag.

I was able to fill 3 20gals. and 2 40gal tanks from one of the little bags.
Not too bad.

Compared to ReptiBark it was such a good deal I never questioned it. And I picked it up about 4 months ago, so I could be off on the price, hard to remember stuff when you get older, LOL. Now, where to find a feed store here in the great urban megalopolis....

Thanks Derek, I didn't mean for you do do that. I was kidding because I live a stone's throw from DC and inside the Beltway. I know that even here you don't have to go far to get back to country and a feed store. do appreciate it, though.

On the other hand, when I was a kid, sometime around the end of the ice age, there was a feed store on the main road into DC from my area that even had live chicks and ducklings for purchase. That one, however, is gone.
