Beginner's luck, or not enough pinky?

Lavbino368

I have herps!
Voldy and Nagini have both had their first feeds with me now.. Nagini's was about an hour and a half ago. They both fed with MORE than vim and vigor, taking the pinky within a minute. Am I the luckiest first time Corn parent ever, or am I not giving enough? Nagini is a bit bigger, maybe by a month or so's growth, but here are some pictures of his lump (last pic, I swear he was begging)! It looks good to me, one day old pinky. Does anyone think I should give another? I swear he went nutzo looking for another after he swallowed it (which he did by sticking his head straight up in the air and down the hatch it went!). :licklips: Any and all input welcomed! Also, let me know if anyone thinks I will stress him out by sitting by the table while he is in feeder tank. I didn't move much, stayed quiet, the flash only went off once (accidentally) on my camera, although he did seem interested in trying to eat the wrist band if he could have =P

to me, that still looks like a fairly large lump. so no, i wouldn't offer another pinky just yet. do a search for the "Munson Plan." i'm not sure weather or not you're familiar with it. it's a guide that will help you decide what size prey to feed your snake. you will need a gram scale, though.

personally i don't find that watching them eat stresses them ALL out, nor does the flash. HOWEVER, i do have a few snakes that need very specific conditions before they will feel comfortable enough to eat. i have one ball python who will ONLY eat late at night, usually around 10pm. she needs a live ASF (i have tried EVERYTHING! she is 2.5 years old and only around 600grams) and the room needs to be dark and quiet. any other disturbances, and even if she's already struck and killed the rat, she will drop it and go running to her hide. quite frustrating, really.

basically what i'm getting at, is if you watching or taking photos stresses out the snake, then stop. but it doesn't look like he minds at all!

Thanks a bunch :) I try to feed them both later in the evening so they can chillax in their room and I'm on the other side of the house zZz.. They were two days apart in feeding times, but I think I'm going to change them both to the same from here on out since they did so well! I'll definitely keep an eye out for any changes and/or signs of stress. I'm keeping a log of feedings as well, (dates and results after 2 days). The breeder recommended putting a blanket over the feeding tank if I had any issues, but like I said it was like they'd done it with me a million times! I'm so relieved =] Thanks for the link too! I'm sure that will come in handy as they grow. They are so puny right now! Lol.

haha i know! it's absolutely so thrilling to see them grow. i got my first corn what seems like forever ago, and she was small enough to curl up in the palm of my hand and not even take up my whole palm! and this year, she's been hookin' up with my snow corn like crazy.

I wouldn't feed more than one pink at this point.

Before you switch them both to the same day, have you considered that then you will not be able to handle either of them for two or three days following feeding day? If they have staggered days, you always have a snake available to handle.

@ katia, *Sigh* I guess they grow up so fast! Lol.. I can't wait to get to know each of mine more..

@ Nanci, Good point! I guess I'll just keep them on their two day apart schedule! How convenient =]~

Lol, my amel does that...

She 'sniffs' the mouse for 10-20 seconds, then BAM, Nom Nom Nom...

My guys are boring, they just nose up to the mouse and then slowly and carefully take it into their mouths. Sometimes I can lure King Crimson to strike by doing the zombie dance, but then he gets all huffy when he misses and ignores the mouse for a couple minutes. So usually I just let him nose up to it, even though it's boring to watch.

He's so cute. :) One of my guys (Russ) eats like a pro, as soon as he sees the pink he strikes at it and has it down in no time. He doesn't care who's watching. My other little one (Dex) has to be placed in the feeding container with a pinkie and then covered up with a paper towel. I have to leave him alone for quiet a while before he'll eat.

My guys have always been very opportunistic feeders. They would probably eat and eat if I would let them. That looks like a good sized food lump for your snakes.

Congratulations on having great feeders! That's one big worry you won't have to deal with. Where did you get your babies?

And I concur that they're only ready for one pinky now, no matter how much they'd like to convince you otherwise! :)

Thanks everyone!! I know, I am so lucky.. I'm a worrier so it was a big fear for a while, but I haven't had any re-gurge or any refusals for either boys!
@ Caryl, I got them from The Pet Zone in Pittston, PA. Bill Pambianco Jr. and family own the shop.. according to them he's been breeding reptiles since he was 7 and his father before that! He was pretty knowledgeable and a huge help, didn't try to up-sell like some places do either! I would totally go back if I ever add another snakie to the family!

It's always a relief when new additions feed well early on. Yesterday was first feed for my 2 new additions (1.1 adults with unknown history).

The male (a big, grumpy beast!) struck with vigor after a couple sniffs and was looking around for more once it went down! I was pleased with the triple loop he threw round the XL mouse. I've only ever seen my amel yearling do that. He struck first time I ever offered to him!

The female took a bit longer and only threw a single but still pleased! She's such a docile darling. Complete opposite to her stud! They are kept seperately as they did not come as a pair.
