I just got a corn snake (almost a year old). I've never seen aggression from him at all yet until I had him out on my lap last night and my cat was sitting near me. The snake went over to my cat and struck her & bit her foot. The cat wasn't doing anything. Just sitting there, facing the other direction. She wasn't moving around or anything. Can anyone tell me why this happened? Any ideas? Anyone???

Why? He smelt/saw the cat and it was a threat, regardless of whether it wasn't doing anything. The snake was just defending himself. It's unlikely he could tell that the cat was looking away - if it was within striking distance, it was far too close.

As pointed out above, a cat is a huge threat to your snake. You've had a lucky escape!

The cat is okay. It's just afraid of the snake now. From here on out, cat and snake will remain at a distance. My cat stays away from it now anyway, as she thinks the snake is out to get her. Thanks for everyone's input.

I have a cat, as well. And she is not allowed ANYWHERE near my snakes. Initially, when I had my snakes in glass aquariums with screen lids, she used to sit on top of the screen and watch them move around inside their cage. Until one day I noticed one of my snakes with a bloody claw mark along it's back. She must have slipped her claws in through the screen and got at one of my guys. Needless to say, now she is not allowed in their room AT ALL. That was a close enough encounter for me.
