Okay, kinda ready for the bashing but I got lucky and learned my lesson. I got my first snake 3 months ago and had enough money for everything except a proper thermometer(digital one) and a rheostat. I was under the assumption that cheap piece of s*** that came with my kit would work for temp. measurement, I was wrong. So after getting some assitance from Cornsnakekid92 (you rock kid, even if you are a kid, Not sure though) I got a really sweet digital thermometer for 8 dollars, and a rheostat for 20. Both good companies and I have it all hooked up now. For those faint at heart stop reading now okay -

So I hooked it up, temp prior rheostat - 124.6 F
Temp after rheostat - 83.4 F

I feel like a bastard, I am so lucky she was smart enough to never touch the glass and stay on top of her substrate. I got lucky, if you are reading this and you have an undertank heater without something to adjust the temp, get one ASAP. I had no idea I was 40+ what is acceptable, I could have fried Corncob to death. Thanks for the assistance tonight Cornsnakekid, you saved me a lot of heartbreak and you saved my girls life. :) I owe you!

I'd expect you've been bashing yourself with 'what if' anyway. Glad your snake is set up better now, and kudos for posting this, it might help someone else in the same position.

Hey, I did the same thing with my first snake. The temp on top of the substrate was a comfortable 85, but directly on the glass was 132. That was before I found this forum, and when doing my research, not one caresheet, forum, nor person on any e-mail list told me I would need something to regulate the temps.

Don't beat yourself up. We were all new once. Even Dean.

I have it like 80 right in between the substrate the and glass which I think is a pretty good temp, she has never once burrowed in her hide so I think Im safe. Its really hard with this pos rheostat I have from zoomed to get the temp right....lame.

Atleast you got it now, but snakes prolonged to temp's over 92 degrees can have metal issues later on.

Good luck

Sooooooooooooooo that's what Kieran's problem is? :) Like BeckyG, no one ever said a word about a rheostat or a thermostat to me. I guess I'm darn lucky for him to make it to such a good size and healthy as a horse :)

What kind of metal issues? Can't wear earrings containing nickel? :grin01:

It take a big person to admit they messed up.

But,it takes an even bigger person to admit they messed up and then post it on the forum so that others don't make the same mistake and harm there snakes. My hat is off to you sir.

Well I figured that I messed up and in case someone else is doing the same thing that it is a problem. The rheostat I have isnt good at all but right now it seems stable at 80, it fluctuates between mid 80s to mid 70's. eeekkk.
