Big Food

Ok, I had Whispher eating two big pinkies every week and decided it was safe to move her up to a fuzzy. In retrospect, that probably wasn't the brightest idea that I've ever had. She got down the fuzzie, but it took her a VERY long time ( it didn't help that she ate it backwards and got caught on a leg first...) but now that she has it down, it's been about three days and I can still see the lump. Granted, it is noticably smaller, but I'm still a little worried about her. Is it normal for bigger food to take so much longer to digest? Perhaps the fuzzies skin is thicker?

not in my experience?? I've just moved mine up 2 adult mice and the lump dispersed at the same kind of rate as when I was feeding 2 pinkies, maybe ur snake is compacted? Don't take this literally as I'm a noob!

It has been my experience that if you can still see a lump after three days then the snake is going to regurge. :puke01:

Well, since there is nothing I can do at the moment I'll just keep watching her. I won't be giving her another Fuzzy for a while, that's for sure...

You can try cutting slits in the back of the animal it helps the digestive juices get past the skin and digest quicker.

Just a suggestion, have you fed her 2 pinks every 5 days? If so wait a while before you feed a fuzzy, say every 7 day feed. That or switch it up some, one week give a fuzzy the next give two pinks just to give your snake a break from working so hard. Slits in the back like Khaman said are good as well because it aids digestion.

if she's been digesting 2 pinks a week, there's no reason she couldn't move up. the description of fuzzies range from peach fuzzies 4-5 days old to anything short of open eyes, depending on your source. 5 day old babies have peach fuzz, and are about 2/3 bigger than day old pinks.

temps, etc. being the same, i don't see a problem going to a fuzzie. just gauge its size by that of your snake.

I agree. If your snake is handling two pinkies a week then you're fine with a fuzzy.

I've personally never bought into this rule about feeding two of the same sized prey items before moving up to the next size, but whatever, I suppose. Just guage it by your snake. After a while you'll know what the snake can handle, and what it cannot. We do not give them enough credit for being able to digest and handle very large prey items. We tend to underfeed for fears of regurges, when more than likely our snakes can easily handle what they're on right now, and quite probably the next size up.

When mine moved from 2 pinks upto fuzzies the lump was apparent for 3 days for the first 2-3 feeds, i never had a regurge and just put it down to the fur on a fuzzie, and the snake getting used to it. If it keeps it down then their isn't a problem imho.

Thanks for all the advice. I do slice the pinkies when I feed her and I really think it helps, but as this is my first corn, I really have nothing to compare with. She's moving around now and the lump is pretty much gone. Woot. I think I'll keep her on pinkies for the next three weeks and then try again with the fuzzies. Thanks again.
