Actually it depends if your talking about the heat version. The point of those are to give your reptile heat without the light. It simulates moonlight... The red supposedly can't be seen, so that and the ceramic, are also an alternative to night cycle heat sources.... or you can just use a regulated, (thermostat/rheostat) UTH..
