Black lights? Semen and blood

Lavman breeder

New member
I've been breeding corns for quite a few years now and just recently I've been thinking of how nice it would be to use an "SCI" method of finding the semen spillage after breeding. I've heard rumors that uv lights or black lights can cause semen and blood to glow in the dark? I was wondering if any of you have tried using a black light for this purpose?

thx,

Hmmm...

I think blood needs to be mixed with a catalyst before it glows under a blacklight.

Semen however may glow on its own...perhaps someone from CSI can chime in.

Blood needs an aditive to show up blue. I am pretty sure body fluids show up on their own with a uv light which I think is different than a black light but not sure. I've watched CSI and those types of shows for years. They try to be as factual as possible. Thing is you can not tell semen from blood without the chemical that turns the one blue.

Why don't you just get a blood tracker light from Wal-mart in the hunting section? I have a Smith and Wesson one with Blue and Red Led lights and anything liquid shows up easily including blood. There are different kinds though and everyone knows where a Wal-mart is.

Just my thoughts......

Thanks for the reply's. There is usually a little blood in the semen so one of them hunting lights should work. I'll give it a try.

Semen definitely glows under a black light! Sometimes teenage fun and cool bedroom decor do not mix... :noevil:

Interesting thread :) lol!

Why don't you just skip a step though and breed them in a clean empty tub? I don't have much trouble finding evidence with my guys this way....

They can get out of an empty tub. I've got 60-70 adults I'm breeding here and many times the female is reluctant to let the male breed. I can leave them together for 4 days and not know if she was bred or not? That is why I'm thinking this uv light/black light method would work for me.

I just purchased my black light and will try it tonight. I'll let you guys know how it works!:)

Good point. I was thinking a bathtub for some reason.

I tried the black light/ uv light last night and it did not show up any of the semen I already knew was there. I don't know if I have the wrong type or power of uv light but it did not work at all.

If you have newspaper on the bottom of your otherwise empty tub, you'll find semen spillage with no need for blacklight, hunting lights or other fancy gear. You don't actually need a separate breeding tub, either. I personally just remove the aspen from the male's viv and put down newspaper, then add a female. Love - or lust, at any rate -ensues. If a female is reluctant, I leave them together overnight. If they mate, the evidence is obvious even if the act isn't observed.

I breed my snakes in an empty underbed rubbermaid tub #2119. Finding evidence is pretty much a no brainer.

I found this funny for some reason.

I'd ask how you knew semen was there but I'm afraid I'd get a response like Josh's... one I didn't need/want to know!
