Today I noticed that my amel male has a black line on his upper lip.. I do have him on black and white newspaper right now as I ran out of aspen and there seems to be none in pretty much the whole city until the shipments come in next week. Could it be newspaper ink? There's no black anywhere else on his body.

LOL... you should re-name him Charlie Chaplin! :D I agree it looks like newspaper, but obviously have it checked if it's not gone in a few days. I keep most of my snakes on printed newspaper (it's free and easy to clean, plus I'm allergic to Aspen), and occasionally they do get ink on themselves. Here's Mona after knocking over her water dish & laying on the wet paper all night:
