Boba's shed complete

Darken

Hello,

Everone was right, Boba had his first shed (living with us) my wife called me just now and let me know that he shed, she said that it was a complete shed, from head to tail and something about eye holes in the head portion of the shed.

I can't wait to get off work and see this thing..

Thank again for all your input.

Congratulations Darken!!!!

something about eye holes in the head portion of the shed

When you get home, just make sure the eyecaps are part of the shed and not still on your snake. If you see holes in the shed where the eyes are, chances are your snake didn't shed its eyecaps. I'm certainly not trying to alarm you but just something to look for when you get home.

Again, congratulations.

Regards,
Steve

If indeed his eyecaps are still on his eyes, what would the procedure be to help in the removal.

I've read that you shouldn't try to remove them. They should come off next shed if you get your humidity higher. That advice may have changed recently though. I one removed a stuck eye-cap from my king snake by wetting my fingers and lightly rubbing his eye, VERY gently. He didn't like it much. The main thing to remember is that you could blind your snake if you are not careful.

If you need to remove a stuck eyecap, here are a couple recommendations:

1) A dab of mineral oil on the eye with the stuck eyecap works well. Carefully pluck at the edges of the eyecap with a pair of tweezers until the cuticle breaks free.

2) Swab the eye with a Q-tip soaked in warm water for 30 minutes. Sometimes this will loosen the eyecap all by itself. If not, carefully pluck at the edges of the eyecap with a pair of tweezers until the cuticle breaks free.

If in doubt you can always take your snake to a qualified vet.

Regards,
Steve

Come to think of it, I think I used Steve's option #1 on a small boa once. He drew blood on my arm. :D

You should see the eyecaps on the shed itself. They look like really small contact lenses. If there are holes in the shed where the eyes are, chances are your snake retained them.

Can you leave them on??? Sure you could, but they can cause complications.

Regards,
Steve
