My normal has developed a breathing problem (slight rattle). My corn book suggest turning up heat to see if this cures it. Good advice or should I see a vet ?
Turning up the heat should help if the snake has a upper respiratory infection, but it's best to take it to a vet to make sure that is what it has in case that assumption is incorrect or if the problem is more serious than you think.
My pet store has been given me hemp bedding instead of aspen (just found out) he says its the same (not sure from posts on here - if I remember rightly) could this be a additional factor to breathing problems?
I don't really know anything about hemp bedding, but I guess its a possibility. Sometimes dust can cause them to sneeze, but a rattle would definitely be worse than that, so I would assume it's something more.
Hemp bedding is not a problem the way cedar is. I've used it when it first became readily available with no issues. The rattle might be something as simple as dry skin around the nostrils. I have snakes that make a rattling sound when they breath for easily a week before they shed. If you don't see discharge and the animal is active and eating I'd wait for a shed and see if that cures the problem.
