breeder or pet store and what size to start

I'm looking into getting my first Corn, my son wants one for his birthday (and I had wanted one as a kid) so i'm doing all this research. I've read the Love's book where she suggests viewing them in person at a breeder. However, the only breeders I've found are on the East Coast and I live in Southern California. Also is a hatchling better or a yearling (of which there seem to be a lot available on web sites). Hatchlings seem cuter to start off with and may not be as intimidating for my son , but since most hatchings haven't started yet how long do you have to wait to get one from the upcoming season. Hope that wasn't too confusing.
Thanks in advance, I know I'll have a bunch of other questions later.

Tina:)

Tina,

This is a post from a few weeks ago that may answer some of your questions on SoCal and breeders:

As far as Yearling v. Hatchling, the selection of yearlings is getting pretty slim. However, there are several folks around here that still have some. Hatchlings should start popping up around June or July.

I would say that the age of your son should be a consideration. If he is younger, a hatchling may be kinda delicate, whereas a yearling maybe a little more hardy. Just a thought.

Either way, I think you're in for a lot of fun! Keep us informed...

Like CAV said, your son's age is important to consider. I would go with an older snake if he's like..11 or younger. Yearling/subadult will probably be better.

Don't go to a petstore and get the corn. Not only will you pay $70 for an anery A you can buy from a breeder for $30, but you have no assurances on the genetics and health of the animal.

Not to make an argument:p but I just wanted to tell you to get what you think your son can handle. I have two twin cousins. The boy cleans his Iguanas cage every saturday, feeds it every day after school, and gives it water every morning before his shower. He also holds it all the time very very carefully and loves it even though it scracthes him and makes him bleed. This i an 8 year old by the way. On the other hand, the girl loves pets, gets bored, plays with dolly barby betty whatever, and eventually kills her pet. Kids of any age can show carefulness, love, and affection, you just have to know when they are ready.
