Breeding out of (natural breeding) season??!!

Hey there.

Is it possible to breed corns outside the dates of their natural breeding season e.g. spring/summer time?

Surely, seeing as captive corns' environment is artificial in itself it would not matter what time of year we were to breed corns?

As long as the temps were right they could be put into brumation at any time of year? (i have read brumation is unnecessary for successful breeding, however i think it is the route i would take).

I have never bred snakes, but do intend to in a year or so. This question came to mind, and i could not find any threads related to it, i may have missed an obvious answer by mistake.

If anyone can enlighten me or point me in the direction of a similar thread previously posted then i thank you in advance.

If you had captive bred adults that had never been cycled, and you brumated them in May and June, you'd be able to get eggs from them in August...assuming you also controlled the light:dark cycle and all other husbandry factors were maintained properly.

I've had fertile eggs in November, from a female that was put in the a male for the first time for 10 minutes, while her previous owner cleaned out her cage in late September. So yes, it can be done and without any manipulation by us.

Having said that, the female is part of my breeding plans and has only ever laid in late Spring/early Summer since then.

I understand that if you control their photoperiod, temps & brumation, you can pretty much achieve year-round laying. However, most large-scale breeders prefer a few weeks off over the Winter!

Ok thanks guys.

So basically it is perfectly feasible to breed a snake any time of the year (supposing they have not been bred already that year), although it is not widely practiced?!

My question only arises because i am getting a couple of adult corns very soon and don't think i can wait until next spring.....unless of course breeding out of their natural season is frowned upon in some way.

If it is harmful in anyway to the snakes of course i will happily wait.

Thanks for your interesting responses guys.
