Brumation

I've been reading some things on brumation, and from what I understand, it's kind of like hibernation in mammals. What I'm confused about is this: is it something that I should be letting my corn do? Should I leave him alone for a length of time? I see in some threads that people give their snakes to other people to brumate them.....?? I'm not sure I understand the whole thing. Can someone explain it to me??

Yeah, it's kind of like mammal hibernation. Low temps, fasting, and reduced daily light duration will put a corn snake into a semi-dormant state where few calories are burned and conditions are optimal for certain reproductive functions (e.g. sperm production). Brumation serves to synchronize the males' and females' breeding cycles, taking some of the guesswork out of breeding. But you don't need to brumate a corn snake if you don't intend on breeding it. If you DO intend on breeding, Don Soderberg's new book has a great outline of the entire captive breeding cycle. You can find here:

Corn Snakes in Captivity

oh, I understand now...thanks for clearing that up. It's all about the breeding issue. I don't think I'll be breeding mine, but if I do decide to, then I'll pick up that book for sure!
Thanks for the info..I feel so much smarter now. :dancer:
