Steve,
Sorry to hear about your bad news. Iota lost Bruno tonight. We got him at five weeks or so. It was touch and go getting him to eat, but things started looking up...eating regularly (heads, halves, finally whole pinkies). After the last meal, about nine days ago, he seemed to have trouble eliminating the meal. He was due to shed soon and became lethargic. The poor little guy seemed to become constipated and started drinking a lot of water. The front six inches became skinny and flaccid, while the back end became markedly distended. We tried the warm baths and exercise, but this evening the curtain dropped.
To anyone out there who might have an opinion: what evidence do you know of concerning extremely hard water? We are on a well and have noticed a larger amount of scale in our water recently. We even bought a jug of drinking water for Bruno, but never got a chance to use it.
Anyway,...condolences to anyone who has gone through trying to keep a hatchling firing on all eight. It would be nice to know what might have gone wrong, if anyone has suggestions. We really enjoyed his company while he was around.

Bruno Remembered

This may take a few tries, but I thought I'd submit a little picture of Bruno, taken a few days before his passing, for the gang here in the forum. Iota got a lot of good information from you. She's still feeling pretty down over the fellow... she put so much effort put into maintaining this (her first) hatchling.

Anyway, here he is. RIP Bruno.

Terrance

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like you did all you could and im sure he had a great time when he was with you. He was beautiful.

R.I.P Bruno

Sounds like kidney failure to me. Bloating is common when the snake doesn't eliminate waste properly. It could be a whole bunch of reasons why. In chondro it's chiefly from dehydration, but it can come from other things. It's possible that your snake became obstructed for some reason. Was he fed on the substrate? Sorry to hear about your loss. Doesn't sound as if he was all that healthy to begin with.

MegF,
Thanks for your concern. I don't think Iota will be up to chatting about this for awhile, so I'll report what I know. She would feed him on a deli cup lid even though the substrate was ReptoRug (?) that was kept quite clean. Bruno always seemed to completely devour the meals before moving off to his hide.
