Bubblegum rat snake?

Hellstrom

New member
I had never heard of a bubblegum rat snake before I got my new handsome fella. There was debate (that didn't include me) as to whether he's 1. a bubblegum rat snake or 2. a high color albino black rat. Since bubblegum rat snakes were developed by our own Kathy Love, I figured this is the place to ask. I've never seen another snake like him, so I have no clue what he could be. He's nearly 1300 grams and an absolute sweetheart :D

These pictures are outside and as close to his true colors as a camera can get...

OMG he's HUGE!!!!!!!!! And gorgeous!!!!!!!!! Gino Sassani is a member here, too, maybe you could PM him or Kathy? I wonder if there are pics on Gino's site- it's Lost World Reptiles or something.

Lol Nanci! He is a monster...my arm got tired taking those pictures :) I'll send Kathy a message and take a look at the lost world website. Thanks!

I _think_ Gino was the original breeder of striped BGRs- he should be able to recognize one easily. He's a really nice, helpful guy.

Alright, I've sent some PM's, but no one else has any opinions? I've heard about opinions and how everyone has one :D

As far as I know, Gino got all of his bubblegum rat snakes (including the striped gene) from me. The striped actually originated from a wild caught baby glades / yellow rat caught in Belle Glade in 1979 that we raised and later proved out.

Bubblegums ARE black rats - with some yellow and glades thrown in. Mine were more glades / yellow than black for the most part. But a particular specimen COULD be mostly black rat, or mostly yellow or glades, depending on what breeders have done with the line recently. They are quite variable. Pure black rat amels are also quite variable. Most of my bubblegums had a somewhat different color, so I suspect that this one is either pure black rat, or has more black rat than most of my line did. BUT - it has been quite a few years since I kept them. Because they are all only subspecies of each other, somebody could have easily bred one of my bubblegums to a black rat (amel or otherwise) and is now producing animals that are far higher black rat percentage than mine were a generation or two ago.

Basically, my guess is that it is higher percentage black rat than my bubblegums were, but that unless you do some DNA tests, there is no way to know for sure, IMO.

That's very helpful. I don't plan on doing DNA tests, but it's always nice to know a little more. So mostly black rat, if not all. Sounds good to me :D

Thanks Smallet! He is pretty monstrous...

Nanci, maybe I'll bring him to meet you when I visit all my family in Gainesville :D

Beautiful snake...jmho first glance I thought "Amel black rat" and not a 'gum, but could be depending what he was bred from :)

Rat snake morphs sure don't get a lot of love; it's too bad...Lookin' forward to a pair or more of Hypo 'Glades myself this year...

GREAT starting point for a new "Hellstrom Line" Bubblegum Project btw ;)

Lol, Chris..."Hellstrom line" huh? Sounds pretty catchy to me... I would definitely buy a Hellstrom morph...

I should do something crazy fun like a white sided bubblegum...
