Congrats! It looks like you have a beautiful "Classic" corn, aka "Normal" or "Carolina" corn.

As for the wood, it is something that needs to be treated really well so nothing can penetrate it such as spilled water, urine, feces, and it must be a corn-friendly wood.

I am a glass aquarium girl, so I will let the "carpenters" weigh in here!

Congrats!

Unless your thinking "furniture" quality wood viv I would also go with a glass tank. Cheap and easy to clean, heat and contain the snake. I build custom Vivs and racks but for that guy I'd get a tank especially if it's your first snake.

Can you expand on what you mean by " perfect size for single snake and the perfect size for a pair of snakes and some ideas how to build the cage"

That's great !!
Keep in mind never co-habitat snakes. A nice shelf unit with 2 or 3 10 gallon glass tanks for hatchling to yearlings is still the easiest way to go. Building a custom wood "box" is easy. The hard part is adding heat and ventilation safely and constructing it to keep the snake (esp. hatchlings) from escaping. You'd be amazed what they can get out of including glass tanks but at least the tank is simple to escape proof. Also as Smigon mentioned, Wood needs to be properly sealed and have a inside surface that is easy clean. Definitely no savings building your own either. You might end up with a nicer looking Viv than a glass tank but it will cost!!!
I think really the bottom line is to get to know your corn snake first and the art of keeping him in a simple setup before jumping into building custom wood Viv's IMO......
Hope this helps and welcome to the wonderful world of reptiles :dancer:
