Building glass cages

My snakes (Corn & King) are growing and I would like to go from 20gal to 30 gal tanks. Plastic frames (tops & bottoms) can now be purchased separately. You can have plate glass or acrylic plastic cut to size locally and build your own cage (terrarium). I would like to do this; i.e., buy the frame for a 36Lx18Wx12H tank, obtain the glass locally, and put together using 100% silicone sealer. Has anyone had experience doing this. What should be considered, besides being careful. Of course, I would let the silicone dry thoroughly for a few days before putting the adult snake inside. I would also purchase a mesh top and use a UTH. Thanks much for your help.

Is it really all that much cheaper than just buying the pre-made tank?
I'm paying less than $10 for a 10 gal tank at Walmart and less than $30 for a 20 gal at Petsmart. Sterlite tubs are cheaper, but not as attactive.
