Burrowing and Burns

Hi, i'm new and i just have a quick question. I heard that corn snakes like to burrow in substrate such as aspen and whatnot. but i heard people and the heatpad instructions themselves say that they snake might get burned if it stays on top of the mat too long. So how can i prevent the snake from burrowing on top of the mat? or does the snake know when its getting burned?

No the snake doesn't know that. Like the frog in boiling water it'll gradually become to hot and cause burns. I've used a 7 volt heatmat for a while and i didn't find it ideal as it only creates a hot spot but doesn't raise the temp in the viv itself very much.
So i switched to light and put a branch under it to create that hotspot. As it's heated from above the snake will not get burned.

What I did in my viv for the heat mat is I covered the bottom of the tank with paper towel then I added the substrate. I also ran my UTH and felt to the touch how hot it does get when running.

I have seen some post with folks who have hot UTH put slate in between the heat mat and glass. It still conducts heat but not as high.

You can also buy a thermo regulator that can do this for you I have seen them on line run about $24. I buy from a place called reptile direct, they have pretty good prices.

Can i also use reptile carpet instead to prevent them to burrow at all or is it better for them to burrow in the aspen bedding? Or is reptile carpet just not a good type of substrate?

Reptile carpet is fine as long as you have several to change out when they get soiled. Provide several hides...should be fine.
