Buying Frozen Pinkies - how many??

We have recently acquired our first corn snake. He's still pretty small and eating pinkies. The only pet store in reasonable driving distance that I know of that sells pinkies charges $1.65 each!! I'd really like to buy in bulk, but I'm not sure how many to buy. Should I just go with 50 and see if it is time to step up to fuzzies, or can I buy 50 of each - would they last that long in the freezer?

I'd go with the 50 pinks. Once you are up to two you could start looking towards fuzzies, but your pink supply will be getting low by then.

If it were me, I'd go ahead and get both pinkies and fuzzies, and maybe hoppers as well. I'd get 50 of each. If you order from a place that vacuum packs them, they will last until you use them up.

Although i think the pinks will be the appropriate choice as far as flexibility in feeding i also think you could probably save some money on the shipping if you get pinks, fuzzies, and hoppers at the same time. It seems like a lot of freezer space though and a long time before you go through all of them. Yes, they last long vacuumed packed but i still feel uncomfortable not giving them fresh food. You know how frozen veggies taste compared to fresh- i don't know that the snakes really notice but i do :shrugs:

Did you see the banner RODENT PRO at the right uppercorner ?
They use better prices then $1.65 each !!
Have you thought about breeding mice yourself . With 1.1 or 1.2 you will get enough to feed and freeze some .
And another thing is that we all started with 1 corn but soon needed more mice ( because we have more corns ) .
Good luck with your animal(s) .

Someone on here, I believe it was Zach, was putting together "starter packages" with a variety of sizes to keep one snake fed for a length of time. I will look for the post. But I don't think any one of my snakes has gone through 50 pinks before moving to fuzzies. If you are buying for only one you may want to try a company/person that will mix appropriate sizes for your needs.

Thanks everyone!! :)

I think I'll go 50 each pinkies & fuzzies. It sounds like he should be ready to move on to fuzzies by the time I run out of pinkies - or maybe even sooner. If he is ready sooner, I have some leopard geckos that might be persuaded to help out with the extra pinkies!! :eatpointe

Perhaps we will end up breeding mice in the future. I used to breed mice for my boa when I was in college but then I could keep them in out of the way places - like the rodent room at school, or an unused office - all far from me!! Still one pair might be ok, and we do have a mouse cage in the attic from my son's pet mice....

We'll have to see about increasing the collection. I'm already plotting all sorts of exciting matches for our new boy, but my husband is not a reptile guy.
