Cage size and cleaning

I have 3 mice in one 10 gallon cage, is that to small for them? Also, how offen do you clean the tank?

I have my 1.2 mice in a 10-gal, they're fine. I use Carefresh bedding, and they start to smell after about a week or so. When they start to smell, change out the bedding and wipe off any urine or feces that are stuck the glass. If you have a wheel, wipe it down every once in a while and rinse it under hot water to keep it from smelling out the area around the tank. :)

Heh, lay off the cursing, you'll get banned. ;) Not sure why it'd smell bad after only a day, but I've never tried aspen with mice. Are you sure it's apsen and not some sort of pine? (Pine = bad)

I forgot to add, you can do a search in this forum (or just browse page-by-page if you have time), I've seen a few threads regarding smelly mice and ways to eliminate the smell.

Pine enhances the smell I've noticed. Next time put them on aspen mixed with a little carefresh if you can. And from the sounds of it a trio is good in a 10 gallon.

I'm one of the few who advocates pine for rodents. However its not the wal-mart pine. You need to get a pine that is designed for horses, kiln dried and sifted.

I have about 500 mice on pine (the type I described above). They dont smell until the 6th day or unless their drinking valves leak.

Aquariums have really poor airflow. They are designed to hold in liquid so the ammonia has a hard time evaporating. You can try setting a fan to blow lightly over the top of the tank to increase airflow. It will stink worse for a few hours but should mellow out. Also a window open in the room will help to dissipate the ammonia/musk smell.
