Caging and Heating

I have been doing a lot of shopping around for cages and/or rack systems for my corns. I had one breeder to tell me if I get 2 different size racks, say shoe box rack and a sweater box rack, I will need 2 different thermostats, is this also true for cages? All my cages will be the same size just divided up different sizes. I am looking to get some 48 x 24 x 14 cages and stack them several of them will be divided into 4 compartments for the babies and the rest divided into 2 compartments for the adults, will I need 2 thermostats? And what would be the best way to heat these cages? Also do corns require UV lighting? I am having my cages done in white so it will not take a large light to light up the compartments if I don't need UV lighting.

Hi - the corns don't need UV light.

Hmm, you might need two thermostats - the thermostat can only operate multiple heat mats that are to be kept at the same temp. Like my cages can all use 1 thermostat b/c the heat is the same in all 8 divided sections. I'm thinking if you're going to have smaller divided sections you might need another thermostat for that. I'd ask whoever you get the cages from - are they doing heat tape for you? If they are, they will know how to position it and should be able to help with that aspect. -I just saw you were asking about how to heat - might want to see if the builder will do the heating? I dont think it would be possible for you to run your heat the way I am since there will be 4 in one and if you separate, the heat will be in weird spots in the cage vs on one end. Unless you have more heat tape added at the beginning so you can work around it if dividing, that might be lots of heat tape tho!

Mine are being done so there will be heat on both ends and if I ever do divide them, then I just turn off the heat at one end.

I use 1 thermostat to 1 snake and 1 thermostat to 1 enclosure..
Also
Mats and tape can vary considerably in temps... Just get an IR gun and look for yourself...
The surface will vary in temp considerably across one mat...

IR is the way forward as a digital thermometer will only measure the temp of one point....
IR will allow you to measure gradients in temps and get a better overall picture of what is going on...

The UV light question is already answered.

As for the heating question, it all depends on how you heat the cages and were you place the heat. You may need more than just 2 T-stats.
