Calcium powder???? Help me fellow breeders

DragonSpawn

Harborer of Serpents
Greetings all,
Awhile back I read a few posts on calcium powder, in aiding with egg production. Does any one have a link, web-site, or a contact that you can lead me to. Would like to do some more research on the subject. If I like what I read from fellow breeders that have actually used this product.

Thanks for you help.

I don’t know where you read that, sorry I can’t provide a link. I do believe the general consensus is that it is not necessary. Snakes get a lot of calcium from their prey. Insectivores on the other hand do not.

I remember that

I remember something of that nature in one of the posts, I plan on DC some of my girls next year, thought it might help.

Thanks again Wade, Peace bro

I've used a vitamin D3+calcium supplement with breeding females in the past. It didn't seem to make any difference to the quality of the eggshells - some were still patchy or "snowflaked". I didn't notice any improvement in the rate of recovery from laying (i.e. the speed at which they returned to pre-breeding body weight). Results without over the past couple of years without haven't differed. I'm not planning to bother again, although I'd be interested to see the results of any research.

Calcium seems to be more useful as a pick-me-up after a spell of illness or an operation. My vet usually gives calcium shots if a boost is needed.

The Vitamin D3 element is interesting - it's necessary for the snake to metabolise calcium. Without sufficient D3 in their system, any calcium you give will just shoot straight out the other end and not be absorbed. With a snake that's refused feeds for a while, I think this means that sometimes the supplement can take a few doses to really be effective.
