so saint mary's college of maryland is supposed get 36 inches of snow by tomorrow, with other possible blizzard condtions such as 1-2 days without heat or power in the residence halls. apparently this is going to be a really BIG deal cause they cancelled school today in order for people to have meetings to prepare about the power outage/heat/ how people are going to get food.

I do not know what to do about my snake October, for when the power goes out. I want to try to go out to the store today by 4, so i can stock up. what should i get for my snake to stay warm.???? o and by the way he is in "pink" about to shed soon.....

Stock up on those 40hr heat packs! Seriously! If the power DOES go out, you can put him (tank and all in a big styrofoam cooler with a few of those heat packs.

And do not feed him until all danger of the power going out has passed.

And do you have an accurate way to measure the temp if you have to move him to a cooler? You don't want to cook him, either. A probed thermometer would be ideal. Placed on the snake, not the heat packs. You could probably get by with putting him in a Sterilite or Gladware, with some aspen and a paper towel roll, but make absolutely certain he can't escape.

Heat packs will get up to 150F or so, so don't have it anywhere it can touch the snake's container directly.

Wow that's crazy! Hope your little guy is okay. Definitely stock up on some warm stuff and keep his container probed for temp regulating. Putting him in a plastic shoebox sized tub would work really well, just make sure there is air holes for him. Also with a small water bowl in with him it will keep his humidity up in case he does start to shed.

-off topic- That's pimp that you can keep snakes in your dorms. My school doesn't allow anything but fish. Unless you are sneaky. Lol. :)

Be thankful it's a corn snake and not a tropical or otherwise overly-sensitive snake.

You know, for the future, if you only have one snake, you could order a shipping box and just be ready to pack him up in that for emergencies. LLL Reptile sells a complete box with heat packs. I _think_ you might want to experiment with a heat pack when you don't need it, though.

Put some large bottles of water (fill soda bottles, milk jugs, etc) in the cooler in between the snake and the heat pack. The water takes longer than air to heat up or cool down (provides "thermal mass"). So it will help to temper the environment to prevent rapid heat up or cool down.

If it is a corn with an empty stomach, over heating is FAR WORSE than chilling. And remember that the heat pack does use some oxygen.

You can also heat the snake with bottles filled with hot water. If you have a gas stove or some way to heat the water. Change the water periodically as it cool.

Insulate your cage some how so that it will retain what ever heat you put in there. Wrap it in blankets or towels. Move it to what ever part of your house will be the warmest.

UPDATE...

so far I bought 9 body warmers that are about the sive of my hand and they last for 18 hours. the TV reception on campus just went out, and the snow is comin and stickin. I also bought 24 cases of water and I might use my roomate's cardboard box to place his tank, the bottled water and the hand warmers in. what I will do is I will apply each as stated and wrap a blanket around the bottom and sides of the tank between the warmers and bottles. LUCKLY I have a temp probe and a stick prob (that just sits on the substrate) so i can monitor the temps whle the tank is in the box. hopefully the blanket will help retain the heat. i expect for the power to go out tonight or tomorrow morning since the TV is already out

THANK YOU everyone for your advice
