Can a snake cause itself to be kinked?

Jenstar

IN OVER MY HEAD ;)
I have a beautiful Candy Cane female that has horrible kinks in her back. She never had them before. When I fed her last week they were not there, but now there are 3 very obvious ones. I planned on using her as a breeder, but now that isn't going to happen. I have to decide if I am going to keep her as a pet or give her away. :(

I know I've heard of this happening but 3 in one week? I've had this little girl for awhile and she has always acted a little crazy. I'd just like to know if this happens often or not?
Also can you breed a female snake with kinks safetly? She did not have them when I got her so I wouldn't have to worry about it being passed on to her offspring. I personally wouldn't breed her unless I had information that said it wouldn't hurt her. Any opinions would be great. Thanks.

That's funny, I was thinking this just last night. I was watching my corn roaming in the tank, when I noticed that she made a U-Turn. As she slithered past her own body/tail, I started to wonder what the maximum bend radius would be for a snake, and if she could somehow kink herself...

I'll check in here later for answers from the experienced ones.

I would honestly take her to a vet as soon as possible, to at least be checked out. Kinks can start to affect how the pass food and stool. 3 in week in pretty severe.

Certainly do not breed. Kinks can increase the risk of egg binding and problems moving the eggs in her body.

Thankyou for your opinion.

I would definitely like to here from more people that have experienced similar situations themselves. I honestly think she did it to herself because she throws herself around wildly while being handled, not just from the average roaming around her tub.

My lavender girl Vidalia went from looking completely normal to not being able to crawl in a straight line without curling over herself within just a few months. She still eats and poops fine, but she has some really bad kinks. She used to thrash violently whenever she was disturbed.....

Well I fed her last night and she ate like normal, so I guess and wait to see how she digests. I just can't believe how she was perfect one week and now she's all kinked. I don't hold her a lot because I don't want her to hurt herself and it happened anyway. :( I'll try to get some pics in a few days after she digests.

I have a snake that developed kinks as an older hatchling. She didn't suffer any trauma. There was one, then some, then a lot. It happened very quickly. For a time they looked HORRIBLE. She never seemed affected by it, except for some loss of control from the first kink, down. She sheds and eats and grows normally, and stays even with another snake of the same age and weight.

Who knows why it happens, but you have to ask yourself, would you want to buy a baby snake out of a parent who has kinks of unknown origin? My answer would be no, and I won't be breeding that snake. You probably should inform the breeder, too.

At least in my case, it happened within the first week I had her, so I never had big breeding plans. With Beth's Vidalia, she was a beautiful sub-adult snake with a promising future and many people who'd have loved to have a baby from her.

I was just curious about breeding her, but I had no intentions of doing so. When I bought her I had planned on breeding her but that has changed now. As far as eating she still eats great and she just shed this past week perfectly.
I have no idea what I would say to the breeder, she was perfect when I got her and I've had her for about five months. Could it be genetic? Would the breeder really admit if there was something wrong with one of her parents?

If there is an issue with a parent and the breeder did not disclose I would not use that breeder ever again and tell others of my experience. That is just bad ethics.

I was thinking more in terms of the breeder might want to know that had happened out of that pair and to be aware of it and watch out for a repeat.

Oh thats true. I guess I can pm the breeder. Thankyou for the advice. I was just thinking maybe one of the parents might have kinks. I really think she probably hurt herself in her tub because she acts so crazy. I don't know.

Maybe kinks can be similar to scoliosis in humans? Children are generally not born with it, but develop it as they grow, especially around puberty. If this is true, the snake hatches without the kinks but they form during growth.

I really don't know, I am just speculating based on knowing about humans.

Maybe... That is definitely something to think about. :)
