Can I reposition an UTH?

amystl

Feed my emu this gun.
So I tried to put the UTH on the side, due to my overwhelming paranoia of starting fires. (I'm crazy, I know.)

But there has been a lot of posts about putting it under the tank, like it's supposed to be. I know the UTH instructions said NOT to unstick the heater because it could easily damage it.

So this is true? Or could I be safe carefully unsticking it from the side and placing it on the bottom?

I would like to hear any reply by someone who knows about this as well. I unstuck my Zoo Med to place it somewhere else, but haven't used it yet (new snake hasn't arrived yet). I tell you what, I I will turn it on and keep an eye on it and see. Has anyone had any problems with this?

I took mine off and reapplied to a new tank and so far it has been working fine. Just take your time and do it slowly, make sure that none of it tears off and is left behind on the glass. If that happens than io would replace it.

I pealed mine off off cleanely and like i said mine is still working fine.

I suppose it's worth a try. Worst comes to worst, I'll have to rip it off again and buy a new one, which I plan on buying another anyways just in case. If it works, then maybe it's a sign that there will be a new addition shortly down the road. :D

One of the things I miss about living in Florida is the readiness of kingsnakes at pet stores that I can rescue. Beautiful snakes. I loved working with them and would love to have one myself one day again.

But, alas ... they don't sell them here in St. Louis.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Happy herping,
Amy

I've done it. it lost the stickiness and is now duct taped in place but it still works ok, though I found out duct tape can get gooey if heated. The main thing is not to bend it. Sticking them to a tile and putting the tank on the tile is a better alternative if you have to move them a lot.

Ive also done this and mine still works fine. I was wondering how long these things last for because ive had mine for 2 years now and it still works fine. I know the warranty is only a year... has anyones ever stoped working on them?

My oldest UTH is about 15 years old now and still working fine! :eek1:

I think the ones most of you guys in the US use must be different to whats commonly available in the UK. They sound like they come with some sort of adhesive layer built in?

All the ones I've ever used are just a pad .... you have to work out your own adhesive.

I think mine are all Habistat ones (http://www.eurorep.net/habistat/). Certainly my newer ones are ... can't vouch for the older ones as I bought them so long ago I can't remember.

It depends what brand you buy
I have reptitherm uth (all covered with adhesive)
nature's heat (2 strips of adhesive)
and t-rex (no adhesive)

I have 2 zoo med uth that I pulled off and stuck on to tiles, and had no problems. Both of mine were warm when I pulled them off, seems like this would make it easier than if they were cold.

What happens is when you peel off the UTH, especially on the zoomeds it breaks some of the element inside the UTH and this either created dead spots or hot spots.. I have taken them off before sith sucess but have also seen them "pop" when plugging them back in as well. It is usually better to just use some good tape to put them ont he cage instead of using the adhesive on the pad

I'd ditto what justcage said, but also add that to avoid bending them and damaging the heating element, use a razor blade to 'scrape' the UTH off the glass. It also depends on the brand. I personally use the Hagen brand product on my glass cages. They have the heating element encased in a thick plastic sheeting. Some of the other brands are encased in thin flimsy black sheeting that tears easily. I also prefer to use flexwatt, obviously, on my racks.
