Can u tell male from female once joined up

I do realize this is a very bizarre question but I'm gonna ask anyways Just wondering if you can tell during the process of snakes breeding which one is male or female, the reason I ask is because the 1 new pair I recently bought was told which was male and which was female. Judging by the thickness of the tail I thought they had it backwards, Well I put the two together and they got together rather quickly supposible female had a thick bulge right before the slit, It was impossible to tell which was which when they were together. Prior to them joining up they were both doing the breeding behavior equally. what really stinks is that if I was correct I would have put the motley with my male sunglow motley rather than breeding these two together but I don't have a probe and didn't want to take a chance male with male.

A Probe is going to be the only true way of telling if your male is male and if the female is a female. I know some people have posted pictures of the tails to get a guess from others but it's still only going to be a guess...

You may be able to take them to a vet to be sexed but buying a probe kit would be cheaper...

During the actual mating, the male is the one on top and the one with the hemipenes. When you put your pair together, did you see anything like what the photos show? They would have been like this for about at least 10-20 minutes or more (I never really times it).

The pair at the bottom the white is that male or female? Seems to have same bulge. They were locked together for a while. I missed the beginning and end. I don't have probe and no reptile vet here. I had planned on trading the male for a female Saturday so I hope I get it right. Thanks for Picts. Oh also second pict is the one to the left male? The bulge again lol

Just to muddy the waters, two males can sometimes lock up - it's an aggression/dominance behaviour. It usually doesn't get any further than the chasing and twitching stage, but if they're left in close proximity with no way for the "subordinate" male to escape, then a lock-up can happen.

In the last photo, the light gray snake is the female. In the second photo, I'm not sure which snake you consider to be on the left, but the one whose tail comes from under the other snake on the left and is in the foreground on the right is the female. And the only "bulge" I see in either of those photos on the females is the male's hemipenes inside of her.

The male is the one with the pokey outy parts. Much like people.
