Candling eggs

texsnake

Wandering aimlessly
So, I know candling is used to check on the growth of eggs during incubation. What I would like to know is the proper way to candle that causes the least amount of distress to the eggs. How early after being laid should you start candling the eggs? How frequently should you do it? Is it harmful to turn the eggs in hand while candling them? Thanks for any help or advice, I was surprised with a clutch of eggs I was neither expecting or prepared for, so I'm having to learn as I go.

Once the eggs are laid and placed in an incubation medium, do not handle them. The embryo will attach itself to one side of the egg and turning it upside down can kill it.

I candle using a small flashlight that fits right over the top of the egg. I usually candle a few days to a week after the eggs have been laid to see if they have veins. After that, I just candle sporadically for fun. Close to the end of the incubation period, you may be able to see red blobs on the bottoms of the eggs. And if you're lucky, you may even get to see them move a little bit! I don't think candling as often as you want is harmful to the eggs, but of course make sure that your flashlight doesn't get hot.

Did you breed your female? Females can also lay infertile eggs even if they haven't been bred.
