Caring for Hatchlings: Heating and Lighting alternatives

Whilst browsing the forums I noticed that several products (Heat tape, deli-cup sized water bowls etc) that are commonly used in caring for newborns are not available where I live. I have been looking around, browsing for alternatives, but so far have come up short.

I remember someone mentioning using bottle caps as water bowls, but to be honest, I think there would be too high a risk of the cap falling over and drenching the container.

Basically, is there any way I could use products available in the UK to take care of newborn hatchlings, such as certain rack set ups where I could use a heat mat or similar?

Thanks

Az

My hatchling rack is heated with a reptile heat rope on a thermostat. I made the rack by converting a gass-fronted shelf unit I got in a charity shop. The hatchlings go into microwave food containers (like the ones chinese take away comes in). For water bowls they can't tip over so easily I use polystyrene cups almost as tall as the containers with the side cut out (a tip from Susie). Hope this helps

Az, you could still use bottle caps or even emply film container and secure them to the bottom of the hatchling container with hot glue. To fill them without making a mess, use a small medicine type plastic syringe. To empty and clean the caps, remove contents (don't want to loose that hatchling!) and flip over a sink then wipe/clean and refil.
Hope this helps.

Jar lids are shallow enough to be convenient for little ones and don't tip over as easily as bottle caps. :)
