Cat got snake :(

We keep our collection in rubs on a rack, and have done for years, but today our cat decided he knows how to get in. Woke up to the cat with our 2yr opal motley in his mouth. The snake is still alive and active but has 3 cuts around his neck, seem to have stopped the bleeding. Anyone got any suggestions for keeping wounds clean and how to feed safely.

Thanks

Wow I am so sorry. Hopefully someone with experience with wounds like that can chime in but what I would do is dilute some betadine with water. Till it is a weak tea color and let the snake sit in there so it can help flush it out. Cat bites are not pretty, they can get nasty. I would then put him on paper towels and put Neosporin WITHOUT pain medication on it.

Oh no!! How big is your snake? That is my big fear, my cats getting them, I got new safe vivs today.

I hope he's ok, all I would know is the neosporin or vet.

Well, having no direct experience with corn injuries, I found a garter snake that had been run over with a lawn mower once and she had SEVERE damage near her head. I kept her in a small 5 gallon tank at the time (this is before I even had snakes of my own) and rinsed her wounds with peroxide- it fizzes and looks awful but it cleaned it out. I then treated it with neosporin daily and rinsed it out daily. She never had any issue eating, and when she escaped her tank I figured it was her way of saying "thanks, I'd like to go now".
With the injury being on the neck I would worry about possible punctures to the pharynx, so perhaps a vet visit is best before offering food? Like I said, I had no idea what I was doing with the garter, it just turned out well. I would also be worried about possible bacteria from the cat saliva. My first corn was killed by my cat, and I've heard that the bacteria kills birds, since birds=reptiles.. I'd be concerned.

I feel for ya... I had a cat knock over a bird cage and kill 2 budgies... always worried my puppy will get ahold of a tub. Let us know how he does! I'm interested to see how it should be treated....

I'll post an update and pictures tomorrow, visiting inlaws tonight. He seemed to be acting fine this morning, and the wounds don't look as bad as we first thought, hopefully nothing major has been punctured and the wounds don't get infected

I woke up to having two of my tubs knocked down. With my lavender babies. It had to be a cat or a ghost? Only way I can explain it. But luckily my cats don't care about the snakes. I had just fed them last night so they just stayed in their dumped tub mess. But of course the first thing I thought of was this thread and not very lady like words came out of my mouth.

My cats pull out the heat pads from my cages... I don't let them in the room anymore because of the hatchlings.

cmalchow - how lucky you are that your cats don't bother the snakes! The minute they hear me opening the cage clips, they are right there. They drive me insane.

I do hope your snake is ok.
