cat on viv top screen

Has anyone ever had a cat go on the screen on top of the viv and the cat fell through? Because my kitten just started to notice buddy in his viv and has been going on the top screen. Now i know the lid is secure but i don't know how much weight the lid can take before the screen brakes so i'm just wondering if it's something i need to worry about when she gets bigger or are the lids pretty tough.

My 12 lb cat use to do it all the time, but never fell through...My snake is in a 40 gallon breeder. I use to catch him on top of it all the time but only when he was cooped up in my room, the more I let him out now though (now he gets along with the other kitties) he doesn't even notice the tank anymore. Or he figures he can't get inside of it!! lol

had an empty 10 gal become a cat trap. We rescreened the lid and if works fine now. I'd made a top to reinforce the lid and discourage the cat from sleeping there.

Ok thx. I don't let her go on the viv but i know she goes on it when i'm not home so i just wanted to make sure and she's not even close to 12 lbs, she's only about 4 lbs so i'm hopping by the time she gets to adult size she won't go on it anymore. thx again.

Our cats liked to lay on the screen lids as well and the above is a situation I did not want to find myself in with an occupied tank  So, most of our screen lidded tanks are in a room the cats don't have access to and the others are in a custom cabinet that only has an inch gap above the tanks. The rest of our enclosures are wood cages with sliding glass doors.

dude, you could try placing a piece of wire shelf on top and that'll either support and keep the weight off the screen, or even discourage the cat from going on the tank in the first place :shrugs:

I wouldn't be too worried about the cat falling though...
But what about the cat getting the nail stuck in the screen, freaking out, and knocking it over (if the tank is small enough) or the cat getting hurt.

I know my cat gets stuck on our window screen all the time, but that might just be mine ;)

Sure I've seen posts on here about cats going through screen tops.

The problem is that cats are canny. Once they find a nice warm spot to snooze in that comes with a fascinating thing to watch and potentially play with (i.e. the snake) then it'll take some persuasion to get them to stop. I put a trailing pot plant on the top of my vivs when I had a cat and that discouraged her. Just meant that she sat on the floor and stared through the glass though!

Cats do not like to step on sticky things so a little double sided tape or little circles of tape with the sticky outside on a few places on the lid might make your cat think twice about being up there. This has worked for me with a cat that wanted to sit on a window mounted fan.

That would ENCOURAGE mine!! I like the idea of sticky tape. I've also heard of folks putting the wire shelving from Home Depot across the top. The kind for closets. It holds weight well and keeps the cat from getting through the screen.

Honestly, with the all black metal Zilla or ExoTerra screens, I wouldn't be worried, especially for a 10 gallon. The kind I'd worry about are the cheesy mesh window screens that Exoterra and others like to put in the sliding lids for reptiles. Those are kind of flimsy.

We used to have our old 19 pound cat sit on a 55gallon with screen that housed a bearded dragon never fell through :)

My cat wasn't really all that interested in the tanks unless I was cleaning them..

I think they get kind of desensitized after awhile.

I had to put some peg board on the top of my viv that I had here in the office to keep the cats from going thru the screen. With the holes in it, it allows the air to circulate but it's strong enough to hold the largest cat. Just cut it slightly bigger than the lid so that it rests on top of the viv.
