ceraminc heaters?

hi, what's a ceramic heating device and how do i use one? i saw them at a pet shop once, and they looked like foreign objects to me. i read from a few sites that they were preffered over heat lamps. those ceramic things also came in different sizes. i have 15 gallon tank right now, and i dont know what size is good for it, if i decide to get one.

and another question, what's the purpose of using a red light bulb rather than a normal one? just wondering.

and lastly, i have a heat pad stuck to the bottom of my tank, and sometimes Frenchie goes over to the warm side and burrows under the repti bark. i'm afraid she might burn herself. is this ok for her to do? and if not, how can i put a stop to it?

thanx

o.k.

Well you use ceramic heaters by placing them in a brooder type light hood with ceramic fixture in it. They get very hot, and even though you can get them in lower wattages, I believe one might be to much for a 15 gallon tank unless you also used a thermastat.

A red bulb allows a nighttime heat source without disrupting the snakes night time behaviour.

About the heat pad, you'll have to get a good thermometer and see how hot the actual glass bottom where your snake is sitting gets. If it is 85 or under, you should be fine. You can put a layer or paper towel or two in there and keep him under the bark but on the towel as well.

I think a ceramic heat emitter (CHE) is unnecessary for corn snakes. CHEs are best with large cages and/or with animals that need high temps, like a lot of lizards.

For ceramic heaters, you need a special type of clamp lamp to house it. Putting it in a hood could melt it away, or cause a fire. They are nice for heating large tanks, and they dont emmit light, so you can keep it on all day if you want. But for a 15, it would be too much. They usually dont come in smaller wattages than 60 or 75, which would overheat the tank I think.
