Cleaning used terrariums

Hi all ,
I bought two used terrariums and I am going to clean them using a bleach solution . Both of the previous owners of these terrariums had bearded dragons . And I was wondering if I have to be worried about mites and or other things . Right now they are both in the garage and I didn't see my okeetee last night ( I bought the second terrarium last night ) because I didn't want her to get any mites or something !
Thanks

I think mites or some other nasties might be a concern, but not a worry. If you do a good job with the bleach, there is no reason to believe anything would survive your cleaning, unless it's some bleach resistant alien organism! :roflmao:

Mites really suck. If you're worried about them try sealing the terrariums up then leaving them outside in the sun on a hot day (80F+) for a while, from what I read the inside temps can get very very hot and will kill any mites inside. Of course, just let it cool off before putting anything inside lol.

That sounds like it would be a great. I would do it but its kind of december 10th so I dont know where im going to get 80+temps

I think the bleach solution for cleaning is good and as for mites, you can spray Provent-a-Mite and let it sit and air out for a couple hours and that should kill any mites in there and prevent more from coming in up to a month I think. I use it on my new tanks and also monthly when I clean my snakes. It's a good investment to make.

If you've got the time, just leave the tanks in a warm area for about three weeks to kill any bugs. Mites have to eat at least every two weeks, unless they're being cooled down. Or, you can do a preventative treatment with PAM, as suggested by the other poster. That's what I do whenever I get something new in.

PS: If all you have is two or three tanks, I wouldn't worry about it. You can always do the mite treatment if you discover them later. Besides, the bleach may kill anything in there anyway.

:santa:

I always clean with bleach water, rinse, then ammonia water, rinse. Never combine bleach and ammonia. Ammonia kills coccidia. Bleach does not.
