I recently purchased (3 Days ago) a corn snake from a local pet store. Iv done some research and have found a lot of information based on proper cleaning. I read that you can use bleach and water solution or water and vinegar to clean the tank and accessories. I also read where some said soap and hot water is enough. So many options out there lol. What are your techniques to cleaning your snake enclosures and accessories? And Do you clean your feeding tongs after each feeding and how do u do this? I'm Not sure if the wife will let me use our dishwasher lol

Forgot to mention I will be feeding with frozen pinkies which is why I'll be using the feeing tongs.

You probably won't even need feeding tongs until she gets older. I actually only use the tongs for three or four of my snakes, the rest I just hand feed. Babies on pinkies just get the mice set into one of ther toilet paper tubes with them lol.

I bleach the feeding tongs after each feeding because I use them for my lizard, and bug guts are gross.

As for cleaning the tank, it is entirely up to you on what you want to use. For spot cleaning, soap and water is good. When I clean my tubs, I use diluted bleach water and a scrubby to get poop off.

Pretty much same here. Quick cleans/spot cleans/accessories get soap and water. Deep clean gets bleach dilute and thorough rinse.

I am a big fan of vinegar for the monthly cleanings of decor and the vive (mostly because I keep forgetting to buy bleach... and it scares me! Heavy duty stuff) but soap for the rest of the time, such as routine water bowl cleanings and tong cleanings. However, I do not share water bowls or tongs.

I agree with Michelle (AliCat37) that you probably won't even need the tongs! :) I only use mine for my ball python because he is picky, as they are known to be. I put my corns food in a plastic container (a clean and unshared ice cream container) and place that inside her vive, and she comes right away to gobble it up. However, every snake is different. If you've already got the tongs, then what the heck.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the big difference between soap and vinegar/bleach solutions is that soap cleans but doesn't disinfect. If you've got one or just a couple snakes, it might not be as important to disinfect every time - in my opinion. But again, I also don't share anything UNLESS it is properly disinfected with vinegar. The only time I've done this is when one snake outgrows a hide and the other still fits in it, or something like that.

All the best in finding your cleaning routine :)

I have tongs from one rescue I did, but have yet to use them. I feed everyone on a deli lid except my biggest guy (over 900g) who the tongs came with. However, because they fed him rats and I feed him large mice, I just dangle the mouse by the tail with my fingers and dance it above his head. He loves the chase, and once he strikes and has the mouse firmly I let go.

Only when I get a new item (decor, hides, waterbowls) do I disinfect. I use a mild bleach solution to boil the items then rinse really well. With driftwood I do the same thing, but I bake it also after washing (not recommended for plastic plant decorations!!!:roflmao:), 250° for 20 minutes or so.

Unless they poop on the decor I just rinse well, if there is poop I wash with soap and water. It is their own poop so no cross contamination if I didn't get it all, just don't let them share anything ever without a real disinfecting.

With vivs, soapy water unless they came from Craigslist or other used source, then soapy water with a bleach rinse then a plain water rinse before I use it.
