climbing branch & heat

Howdy, everyone. I recently put a climbing branch in my snake's cage, and she's been up there ever since! She seems to really like it. I don't have a digital camera right now, so here's a very interesting (to say the least) picture of my cage setup:

cage_setup.gif

It's kind of an upside-down L with a round wooden base to keep it from tipping over (it's got a lot more going on than my picture conveys; it's actually a quite beautiful piece of wood). As you can see, the flat part of the branch (where the snake hangs out) is near the top of the cage, and it's not as warm up there as it is down on the ground. I can't really position the branch so that it's under the heat lamp because it would be like 2 inches from the bulb, and she could burn herself.

My question is: When I feed her, should I remove the climbing branch to encourage her to stay on the ground where it's warmer? She seems to like being up at the top of the branch so much that she might choose that over the proper temperature required for digestion. Is it possible that she might choose the security of the branch over the right temps? Or will she always move to an area of sufficient warmth when she needs it?

Thanks for the help.

Depends. If available the snake will prefer the right temp gradient. Especially when digesting. On the other hand, the snake will prefer to be safe then choose the right gradient. If you have a good hide in the warm eara and one in the cold she'll probably chooses whatever suits her best. Your branch probably has the best of both worlds. Your snake will figure it out.
