For those of you who have experience with coconut husk as bedding, which of the following products have you used? Which product is best?

Some people have complained about respiratory problems from coconut husk. Which one of these products has caused those problems?

Coconut Husk FIBER:

Coconut husk is a wonderful bedding for my Amphibians.
Snakes, I use either paper towel, newspaper or Aspen.

I have never used any of them, but I would think that the chips would have the least dust out of all three of them. Because the process to make the strips doesn't break it down so small=smaller particles, less dust....and I think it looks more visually appealing, kind of looks like repti-bark....the hush fibers just look like crap...lol my opinion though:)

The substrate I use looks like the shredded chips. It does get in the water bowl sometimes and when that happens I obviously can't just pick pieces out, I have to wash the entire bowl out. I prefer this because it keeps me on top of cleaning my snake's cage every couple days. But it is safe for my snake to digest if he ever swallows a little bit, so I'm never worried.

With the chips I would be concerned about getting one stuck in your snake's mouth--I've heard of this happening and actually causing mouth rot--or even ingested. I would also be concerned about getting some in the snake's water bowl--I'm sure it's safe, but there's a kind of substrate (I can't remember what it's called to save my life right now) that will basically poison the water.

I digress. I guess what I'm trying to say is my snake is living in the same consistency substrate as the shredded husk and it doesn't cause any problems. I personally think it's ideal, and my snake absolutely loves digging through it. If the coconut husk is causing problems for some people, I'd guess it's the fiber getting stuck in the snake's nose or something.

*bump*

Is anyone else using any of these products? I'm considering them but I'd like to hear some feedback first. I'm also trying to figure out which product is best... and which one to avoid.

Thanks!

Thanks! Do you use the chips or the shredded stuff? Also, why don't you like them for your snakes?

I use the almost powdered version for my amphibians.

there are multiple reasons, why I dont use this for corns. But the easiest one is the pocket book. I find it to expensive compared to aspen. But I also use Newspaper, and Paper towels for my snakes.

I use the coconut husk fiber mixed with aspen. No problems with the husk fiber, but I find that it helps with maintaining humidity as opposed to just aspen.
