Coconut husks...

Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone else had any experiance with coconut husk bedding with there snakes. I went to pick up some more aspen at the rep store today and they were out. When I asked the guy about it, he recommended this coconut husk bedding. I actually like the looks of it better... and they had their store corns in it... just wondering if anyone on here had any yay or nays for it?

I have heard of people using it...I like the way it looks better too to be honest. I was thinking of switching as well. I just have to wait til my aspen runs out. I say go for it!

My friend's snakes that I'm boarding came to me in it. It was very dusty, harder to clean etc. Also, one of her snakes had large wads of it shoved up under both sides of her upper "lip" that was very difficult to clean out. I switched everyone over to aspen and they all seem much happier now that they can burrow easier.

My .02 worth...spend it as you wish.

It depends on what consistancy you want too. You can get it in more of a chunked variety, or in a completely shredded variety and somewhere in between. I too prefer how it looks but I find it doesn't hold ordor as well as the white shavings do (I am using fir + eucalyptus, aspen allergy). So I use coconut bedding for leopard geckos.

i keep all of my snakes on coconut bark bedding and they love it they burrow in it and almost never stop i have had no problems with it

It really is a great bedding. I picked up a couple of bags of it for free at an expo a few months ago, so I tried it out and LOVED the results! It was a bit expensive for my liking at the pet store, so I haven't used it since...

I used to use it, but one of our was always getting it clogged in her nose. She was always sneezing with it trying to get the dust out. We switched to aspen and have had no problems since. I do like the way the coconut bedding looks and the way it holds moisture (living in the southwest can be dry). I say try it and then make your own decision.

I tried it, with the same results, couldn't keep the dust out of it. When I got my snake she just had carpet. I was looking for a substrate that looked better than the aspen that was most highly recommended on here, but it had to be something easy to deal with. The coconut lost out to Reptibark.
If I screen the Reptibark before I put it in it has very little dust.
Edit add: If you have a small snake it may not be able to burrow in Reptibark, the pieces are a bit large. I'm not sure on this, never had a small snake.

I personaly actualy use a combination of coconut fiber (basically grouund coconut) and repti bark best of both worlds and gives it a more natural look

I'm a big believer in the stuff! I use it for Sampson and nothing else. It's soft. It's pleasant for the snake. It's very natural looking and feeling. Plus it's aesthetically pleasing! I use the kind that you mix with a gallon of water, let it sit and BAM! you've got fabulous substrate!!! :)

When Sampson is about to shed, I moisten an area of substate on the cool end by adding some water and mixing it around. It drys really moist so it really aides in the shedding process. I've never had a partial shedding or anything and right after I do it, he buries himself there. :)

I love it! It's a great product!

Thanks for all the advise guys. I guess the long and short of it is that that is what they had at the reptile store and so thats what they are going to get for a while. So far I like it alot, it is much softer, and my light colored snakes show up much better on it. Looks great. But we'll see. I cant form an oppinion on it till I see how it holds up until next tank changing day!

I use Fine shredded coconut husks for my cage to and He seems to love it, especially when i spray his cage down every now and then.

A friend uses the coconut husks, it looks good but personally, i prefer the shredded aspen. My snakes love burrowing through it and their tunnels seem to stay intact. The coconut looks to me like it is too dusty, and several posts to this thread confirm to me that it can get clogged in the snakes mouth or nostrils. Besides, I find aspen very easy to keep clean.

I haven't used coconut, but wondered about it. I've used ReptiBark and aspen. My burrowers burrow in the Reptibark, too. The aspen does have the advantage of tunnels that stay, but I don't know how much they mind remaking their tunnels. I live in the Gulf South and ambient humidity is high, even with the house air conditioner. Would that help alleviate dust with coconut husk? Does screening get rid of the dust?

That's crazy you say that, my corn does the same thing. I just sprayed his viv and the next thing I know, he's all over everything investigating. He even licks the walls. :licklips: I feel like Sampson would love the rain if he lived in the wild... :)
