Coffee Smell?

I finally picked up my new corn yesterday! (Pics soon to come) I made a hide box out of a coffee container a couple weeks ago, and it still smells like coffee. I tried to get the smell out, but nothing worked completely. The smell couldn't harm the snake, could it? Coffee is natural, so I think it would be fine, but just want to double check. Thanks!

Thanks. I didn't think it would hurt, but might as well make sure nobody had any coffee can horror stories with their snakes! I will try to get some pics up this afternoon in the photo gallery.

i used some plastic coffee containers too, and what i did to get the smell out was put it in the dish water, let it dry COMPLETELY, and then put a handful of baking soda in. shake it up every few days, maybe leave it for a week or so. then put it through the dishwasher again. VOILA! no coffee scent

I just remembered that we had bought some stuff in a squirt bottle a while back that is supposed to remove any odor. (I think it's meant to work on pet stains, litter box, dead stuff etc.) I think I'm going to try it when I get a chance. I would try the baking soda, but I don't have another hide to replace it with for that long.

You need to read the label very carefully, sprays for other domestic pets is not always safe for reptiles. Many times they can and will permanently harm your snake or even cause death. I would suggest a mild bleach/water mix, then leave int eh sun for a day and it is ok. Your snake is not going to suffer from one day without a hide. If it stresses you too much, you can always toss in a paper towel or toilet paper tube or cereal box.

Is there anything in particular that I should make sure is not in the spray? And as long as the hide is rinsed out completely, should there be a problem?

Lysol and pine-based cleaners are toxic to snakes. Don't use anything with an ammonia base, either. Chlorine bleach, isopropyl alcohol, vinegar, dish or hand soap and baking soda are safe cleansers for use with snakes and snake stuff.

agreed, plus I would stay away from petroleum based products. You can always stick it in the dishwasher and put it in after drying is complete. Owrks for the delis and shoe boxes.
