Considering a corn--hello!

My husband has a ball python that we purchased a little over a month ago. And of course we love him! And you can't stop with just one snake... so I'm considering getting a corn and wanted to pop in here and learn all I can before plunging in. :)

I'm probably going to get an Abbott Okeetee when (if) I finally do it, so I also have to wait for the breeders to have 07 stock--waaa! Nobody has any still in stock, right?? :p

I have a sweater box I'm planning to start my snake in, with flexwatt and hopefully using the same thermostat we use for the ball (it's a Helix), but with more space between the tape and the cage so the temps will be a little lower, or with a dimmer on the corn, whichever turns out to work best. (Since I won't have a snake for a minimum of a few months, I have plenty of time to play with it).

And while he's growing big and strong, I want to work on building a custom habitat (20 gallon-ish) that will be a showcase in our Asian-themed living room. Any thoughts? :D Anyone know a great place to look at lots of plans and pics of custom habitats?

Anyway, thanks for letting me join. I look forward to getting to know ya'll.

Heather

Welcome to the forums! You'll find a wealth of knowledge here for all aspects of caring for your corn. I must say getting an abbotts is a GREAT choice! Thats still on my "must have" list.

Welcome aboard!
If you do a search on things like 'viv decoration', 'custom viv' 'viv set-up' and so on, you should find what you're looking for

Hello and Welcome to the Forums!!! I see you live in Charlotte, same with me. Where abouts do you live, ever heard of Providence road? Thats the road I live off of.

Thank you all for the greetings--and the links! I really appreciate it.

Yeah, I know Providence Road (hee hee--can you live in Charlotte and NOT know where Providence Road is?)--I used to live off of Rea Road in the Arboretum area.

We're in Steele Creek now (out near Carowinds). We love it. A lot cheaper than ANYWHERE off Providence Road! :D

Okay, off to do some forum searches for custom vivs. :) Of course, I'm tempted just to splurge and buy one from Cages By Design--wow, those are nice!

Thanks,

Heather

Welcome to the forums!:wavey:

Keep in mind when searching for viv decorations, your snake won't care what his environment looks like, so buy what you like to look at. But make sure his hides will give him that "cramped and secure" feel. If you think it might be a little too small, it's probably just right.

Doing research a minimum of 2 months BEFORE getting your corn.. .......WOW, what a concept.

Thanks for all the welcomes! Nice to meet you, too, Dave. Maybe we'll see each other at Repticon or such, eh?

Thanks for the tips on decorations. I have pet mice too and, honestly, they have the worst taste in interior decorating, LOL! Their favorites are cardboard egg cartons, cardboard boxes, and toilet paper tubes. And on the rare occasions I give them fake plants or anything else halfway attractive, they destroy it in about ten minutes. :D

So I'm glad to know *I* get to choose the decor and not worry about it being chewed to bits by morning. :D

 Yeah, I know. My friends all think I'm a little OCD. I just think I'm... thorough. :p

Thanks again,

Heather

Maybe, I wish there were reptile shows in Charlotte, but there is one in Columbia SC and Spartanburg. See you around.

Actually, there's a Repticon in Charlotte in July:

http://www.repticon.com/charlotte/

It's at Metrolina Expo. I've heard Repticon is not the *best* reptile show, and you do have to be careful as there will be good, bad, and ugly there. But I'm still excited, and wouldn't miss it on behalf of my two little boys (six- and three-years old) who love snakes. And who knows--maybe a reputable breeder will have some Abbott Okeetee corns (if I haven't already ordered one, lol).

Also, the Nature Museum at Freedom Park has a reptile day every year, and there are usually quite a few breeders and hobbyists there, and they usually know good snake resources in town, so it's quite helpful to go. Unfortunately, they've already had it this year, but if you check their calendar at the end of the year, they'll probably post a date for late next winter. It's definitely worth going to and free if you're a member (and only a few bucks if you're not).

Is the one in Columbia a Repticon? What is the one in Spartanburg? I had not heard of that one.

Thanks!

Heather

He might decide he doesnt like the way you have it laid out though and do a bit of re-arranging. Its always amusing to come down in the morning to a wrecked viv.... :)
