Considering getting a Corn Snake

I'm considering getting a corn snake or two. I'm not entirely sure yet though. I was hoping some of you could tell me why having a corn snake is worthwhile. Some people thin snakes are boring, but they seem pretty rad to me. So what do you think?

After the initial set up maintenance costs are very low, minimal when compared to most pets. A huge variety of colors and patterns at reasonable prices whith new patterns and morphs popping up all the time. They are hardy, docile (well... most are), and their adult size is easily manageable. Those are a few things that are great about cornsnakes to start things off. :)

They are really easy to care for, they only eat and poop once a week!
They rarely if ever get sick and live longer than most dogs.
Odds are, if you have a favorite color, you can find a cornsnake the same shade.

I'm all for easy to care for and amazingly beautiful, "excitement" is wayyy overated!

I've owned a lot of different types of animals and so far I must say I probably like keeping snakes the most (or one of the most) for various reasons. (I've had/have cats, dogs, fish, hamsters, hedgehogs, birds, snakes).

I think snakes are cool, beautiful, amazing creatures. And sure some of their time is going to be spent hiding, but I'm not going to be watching them 24/7 either. When I want to see one, if it's not out, I simply pop open the cage and take it out.

I also find their maintenence very simple. Feed them roughly once a week (depending on their size) and make sure they have clean water. With most of my other animals I find myself cleaning/touching up their cage every day. The cats need their litter box clean, need to be fed every day, water....the dog needs to be fed, walked, watered, taken outside several times a day...the birds poo needs to be cleaned and they need fresh food and water....and rodents, well, rodents are rodents.

With the snakes I usually just make sure they have clean water. Other than that I usually clean their cage on their feeding day while they are eating...unless I spot some poo then I will do a quick spot clean. Pretty easy.

I love all my animals, but I think cornsnakes are wonderful creatures to keep

Thanks for all the comments. I do think I'd really like a snake. I've never really had a reptile before and from what I've been reading online the corn snake(s) would be pretty easy. I have kept fish for a couple years now and although they are beautiful and fun to watch, they are pretty boring since you basically can't even touch them. Cool! I'm excited :)

I have also owned a range of other animals (dog, bunny, bird, sm. rodents [yuck], fish, and I cared for horses for many summers growing up...)

I'd say snakes are "pretty rad". For all the reasons stated above.

Are you very familiar with snakes? I wasn't until my son asked for one about 6 months ago. We started the research (to make sure that I was able and willing to care for it - my son is just 8) and in the process I visited with many different snakes at pet stores and reptile shows. I fell in love. They are beautiful creatures and really fun to hold.
I'm not sure what those people who say they are "boring" are expecting... snakes are certainly not as interactive as a horse or a dog, but they also don't require that level of care, time, or money. They are, IMO, much more interesting and exciting than any other animal you might have in a cage or tank.

Well, let us know your ultimate decision. Hope you stick around! Welcome!
