CORAL SAND ?

Hi,
I've been to a lot of sites on the internet including this one where ive been told that coral sand is bad for the snake.

I live in England and i bought my snake of off a top breeder who recommends it.

I've just upgraded to a Vivarium rather than a plastic tank a few weeks ago and i used coral sand on the floor of it.

The snake seems to have no problem with it and it looks as though it helps him shed as well.

Whats the problem with Coral Sand??

I think its because people get worried that the snake accidentally ingests some of the sand which can lead to impaction. I guess as long as you don't feed your snake in his tank (or off that sand substrate) it should be ok. I keep my leos on sand and have never had a problem. That's just my experience, I've never used sand with my corns so I guess I'm not really qualified to say anything! ;)
Why don't you try getting woodchip or hemp substrate. I would imagine that it is alot cheaper than coral sand not to mention easier to clean out. Cleaning out my leos tank is hellish!!

HHmmmmm

i find cleaning my tank out really easy, i just get a spoon shaped thing and scoop out the rubbish and then add a layer of sand to it.

I've been told that snakes can ingest (swallow) the sand and be ok, but wood chips are bad for them

I'm not sayin you guys are wrong or anything its just that the guy i get my advice from is a big well known breeder who has rattlesnakes and other types of very poisonous snakes so he must know what hes talking about.

yeah, you'll get heaps of different advice from different people. Stick to what you feel comfortable with although I would like to point out that hemp substarte is proving to be very good (I only started using it bout a month ago). Just as long as you are feeding in a separate enclosure it's fine.

Oh and ps, I've been given 'bad' advice by people who are considered *big breeders* so just cause they have a lot of reptiles doesn't necessarily make them the be all and end all of knowledge ;)

pps. just re-read that...I'm not saying I'm an expert when it comes to corns either so please don't think my opinion is anything but that...:D

I have to add my opposing opinion here:D I don't think sand is a very good substrate for Corns. The reasons are that sand is very drying to the skin and can get stuck between the scales and cause discomfort. If you look at where Corn snakes come from then you know they are not desert dwellers. Desert animals are equipped to live on sand, Corns are not. There are other good substrates out there that are more appropiate for Corns. Try one or two out and see how you like them:) I also would be very cautious about claims that the sand will not impact them if ingested. Unfortunatly trouble with a product never shows up till it's a real serious problem:( Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I totally agree

With Alicia. Of course opinions differ on most areas of care, but when it comes to the basics...sand is NOT included. :)

If you have a choice of sand or hemp,
AAAAHH, It almost seems like a no brainer dude,

Actually,I'll bet your guy breeds lizards too and literally gets the "stuff" by the truckload. Boo Koo Bucks$$$$ he's makin.
If he got the "hemp"by the truckload, he'd be "pushin" that too ;)

actually if you have your heart set on a coral ( calci?) sand, Please feed your snake in another tub where it will not get a mouth full of sand, be it nutritious or not :)
