Corn Extraction

So...
I was recently reading an adorable post about corn snakes and paper towel rolls...
And I thought, well, thats a neat, cheap way to supply an extra hide. So I gave my near-yearling Kate a long paper towel roll and not surprisingly she moved right in. That was a week ago.

Since then, I have seen her come out exactly once to drink some water.

Today was feeding day. I picked up the tube and up-ended it gently to try and get her out, no luck. She had curled herself up so tightly into the tube that without shaking it roughly, I couldnt get her out. I wasnt that concerned cause she is a pretty hearty eater so I transferred the whole tube, Snake and all into the feeding tub and threw the hopper in there with her, ready to grab the tube when she left it to get the mouse.

What I wasnt anticipating was that she would simply stick her head out, grab the mouse and then retreat.

She clearly loves the hide, so I am not going to take the tube away, but... ::sniff:: will I ever see my Katie again?

and...is she gonna keep growing till she gets stuck?:roflmao:

Hehehe...at least you can peel the roll off if you want:)
Very cute picture.

FYI...we built a fantastic climbing/hide structure from 21/2" PVC for our adult Anery A...He loved it but we could never get him out! So $30- worth of PVC after 2 frustrating months was changed out for a more 'standard' climbing structure...
He also loved those reptile hammocks;)

:p I am sure you will see your Katie again. If not, you can always pick up her tube and look into the end. I didn't think my snake, Vergere, moved from her tube for 3 days this week. But I think she was out moving around when I wasn't looking. But she has been out a lot the last couple of days.

She may not get stuck, but she may be hanging out both ends :D

This happens to me too. They can wedge their selves in there pretty good, but if they wanna move they have to loosen their grip. So what I do is hold the tube about vertical, head side up, and poke the snake gently from the bottom. The snake should go 'hey what was that?!' and attempt to get away, loosening its grip and sliding down.

Unfortunately, "hides" are very well named! Equally unfortunately, we have to provide them, because hiding is a Corn's favourite pastime.

It's just a natural instinct to stay safe, as they'd be hunted in the wild. As she slowly becomes used to the smells and sounds of her new home, she'll become braver and venture out more. If you give her some extra ground cover like plastic foliage, she might feel able to come out of her tube and you could see her more often
