I've just got my first snake and he was fine for the first few weeks. But I got him out the other day and he rapped around my hand and kept biting me. Any ideas why he might be doing this?

Had you been handling his food beforehand, or was it defrosting nearby? If they bite and hang on, it's usually a misplaced feeding response.

Otherwise, it's possible he may be coming up to a shed. They can't see during the process and get very nervous. If you picked him up suddenly and without warning, you may have scared him and he thought you were going to hurt him.

Generally, a Corn knows that you're too big to take on in a fight so they only bite if they feel threatened in some way. Think about how you went to pick him up and how you were handling him - in some ways, you need to try and think the same way he does so that you can figure out what went wrong.

I may have been handling some of my own food before I got him out. which may of caused this to happen. Thanks for that :D

OMG, were you alone at the time? You could have been eaten. Never handle you corn unless there is someone there to help in case of emergency. You are so lucky.

Yeah corn snakes are really dangerous... You should get a retic pyhton instead, much smaller and safer than a corn snake.. :eats02:

I'm still too chicken to touch my corn, yesterday i was so close... but he moved and i got scared so i shut the screen top and walked away crying... I was thinking about waiting another week to try again, i don't wanna get too stressed out. Maybe i should have a spotter too? lol

sorry, here is some on topic info:

I agree with the food thing, i wash my hand every time before handling my corn snake and he hasn't been aggressive once to me.

like I say i held him before and he was fine. must of been what i had hold of before. I'll give that hand washing thing a go thanks

Washing your hands before handling is generally a good idea. Common household chemicals like aftershave, perfume, air freshener or cleaning chemicals, can be poisonous to Corns. I always like to be sure that I have no traces of anything like that on my hands when I pick them up.

Gilroy- definitely a hungry snake there. When they are trying to kill you, they strike and don't hold on.

Eric- why are you afraid to handle your snake???
