Corn snake as first snake?

I dont have a lot of room, so I need a snake that will be ok in a 29 gallon for life. I asked around and people have recommended corn snakes. Are they good beginner snakes? What else do i need to know? Thanks.

Corns are great!

A 29 gallon should be good for life. Make sure you have a temperature gradient in the cage-you can do this by getting an undertank heater (most pet shops sell them) and sticking it under the tank on one side.

If you use a substrate like aspen mulch, make sure to feed in a seperate container or on paper towels to prevent the snake from ingesting the mulch.

Make sure the tank cover is immposible to escape, if there is the smallest opening the snake will find it and exploit it.

Kingjeff,

I don't think that cage is appropriate for corn snakes. It won't hold heat or humidity and your new friend will probably rub his snout raw on the mesh that makes up the entire cage. A screen top is okay but try to find a cage that has a smooth surface around the edges. Aquarium style cages are inexpensive and work well for this purpose. If money is an issue now, you can start your new snake out in a large Kritter Keeper style cage for 6 months to a year and they're under $20.00 USD.

Just my 2c...

thanks for the reply. I might be breaking down my fish tank and use that. Its a 55 gallon. And then buy a screen top.
