Corn Snake Climbing

SHAKSNAKE

The crappy keeper!
i put some branches vines and stuff in my vivarium, the snake has kind of like a jungle gym type thing on the warm side. now, problem is he's not using it !!

i set it up over this week so its been there for a couple days yet he just doesn't really climb it.

just startin up some convo! i heard corn snakes are really good climbers. i guess this guys lazy.

here's some pics of the setup, if you have any pointers let me know!

i got some aerial shots so you can see how it would look from the snake's perspective up at the plastic plant on the corner of the viv. :twoguns:

I have plenty of branches and logs available for my 5 foot female. I adopted her from someone who had her in a very deficient enclosure (too small, inadequate heating, feeding, etc) It took her months to really even realize they were there. I would occasionally place her on the branches and inevitably she would go straight back onto the ground. However, after nearly a year in the enclosure, she ends up high in the branches, on her own, at least once a week. I think it just took her a long time to revert to some sort of natural behavior. Give your snake a chance. He may just need some time to get used to it. :)

My tank is not nearly as intricate with branching, but I do have one single branch, lol. I've found that my corn snake didn't use it until I sort of acclimated him to it. Every time I put him back in his viv, I place him directly on the branch. I started doing it for no good reason, but I've noticed he started to climb up the branch on his own after a while. Now it's his favorite place to hang out during the evening. It's worth a try!

My Bloodred loves to bask and hang out in her tree. In the morning I'll find her patiently waiting for the sun to be turned on. I we joke that she's a reincarnated GTP because of the way she coils on the branch. I'll post a pic later.

Yeah your critter might be avoiding the stuff because it's so new and doesn't smell like him/her yet. Did you buy it new or get in used? In any case I usually all items I get before putting them in the viv. Also if your critter is digesting or starting in blue it might be a little less active and not feeling like exploring. I have a few critters that like to climb. My female Hypo has a taller tank so I have a fine and a magnetic rock for her to climb on. and my little jungle corn Zafrina thinks she is a tree snake too I'm pretty sure she is always climbing on her wooden tree decoration. (added some pics just for fun)

I am new to corn snakes, but I think it could just be a personality thing...

The first thing my corn did when I let him lose in his new home is go straight to the tree. He loves it! He loves playing peek-a-boo in the holes in the tree and generally spends a lot of time exploring the tree and as well as every nook-and-cranny around the upper perimeter of the lid. It will be interesting to see how interested he is in the tree once he loses confidence in his escape plans.

But four days in, and his pattern is starting to emerge. He sleeps all day completely hidden - and usually around 8pm emerges and heads straight for his tree.

Both of our adult tubs have several criss-crossing dowels in them, shown in Kash's home. They both love climbing on them and spend time on them almost daily (unless they're blue, in which case they hide under their hide boxes)

My bloodred has a molded plastic branch that she enjoys lounging on occasionally, but much less-so now that she's out of quarantine and has other snakes around her. She's under her waterbowl more now :/

Nice pics everyone. I've yet to own a corn that wouldn't use provided climbing branches.

It's also not uncommon to see them off the ground in the wild...

Where'd you get that rock? I love it!

Thanks :D I actually got it with some other reptile stuff I bought from someone on craigslist. I would keep my eye out at pet stores or any shows you go to, I get all kinda of tank accessories at shows :)
