Corn snake longevity.

Hello everyone. :)

I was talking to a friend of mine, who also happens to own a corn snake, and we started to discuss how long corns live.

He told me/ actually believes they rarely make it over 10 years old due to inbreeding, health issues, etc.

In all Honesty, I'd read that a corn can live up to 25 years, if treated correctly, but now I'm not so sure how true that is.

What do you think?

My eldest is thirteen, and I don't believe he is an exception in this. He has many more years to go I believe. Your friend is mistaken imo.

Corn snakes that are properly cared for often live well into their teens and beyond. The corn snakes that are not properly cared for often don't make it to one year. Those are usually the pet store snakes that give new, inexperienced owners terribly wrong advice, or no advice at all. Unless the snake changes hands midlife and goes to an improper home, there's no reason it shouldn't live well past 10 if it is otherwise healthy.

I think 15 is considered a good average lifespan for a Corn in captivity these days, although 10 was more common when I started keeping them 20 years ago. I put that down to improvements in husbandry techniques and the equipment available to us (didn't have heat mats when I first started, and then it took a while for the first reliable thermostats to emerge).

My eldest is 23 (I've owned him since he was 3) and I have another that's 17 (owned from a hatchling). Both have more years in them - with a continuation of the luck and conditions that got them this far.

I believe your friend has been misinformed. He needs to plan on having his Corn for at least another 5 years longer than he's expecting - possibly another 10 or more!

I just read a day or so ago that a member here has one that's 23 years old.

They have to be a good keeeper!! lol

^See Post #4, above! I wouldn't say I was better than many others here - I'm definitely still learning.

I think the only reason my petco snake is still alive is the advice I've gotten from this site. I'll never get another snake from them, no matter how badly I feel for the snakes there.
